Taking one of the ferries from the mainland to Baja is an adventure. If you are coming from the eastern USA, the ferry is going to be part of your trip. But during El Nino years the massive rains in Baja Norte can wipe out long sections of the Mex. 1. In this case, your choices are to take an extended vacation or to take the ferry to the mainland and take the roundabout way back to the west coast via the ferry and the Mexican mainland. So be sure to take this information with you and maps covering the mainland.
Dean reports: The new ferry is spectacular, also driving the mainland side is very relaxing, 4 lanes divided highway 95% of the way. Not one mountain grade or dangerous blind curve. and services and hotels everywhere.
Also coming from Northern California or farther north the distance is identical. The difference is you drive on USA roads for 500 of the 1000
For people from Vegas east it saves us 500 miles. With the price of gas it
almost pays for the ferry if a big truck.

Remember this is a long open ocean passage. Kids under 2 travel free and kids between 2 and 12 travel at half-price. NOTE: Pregnant women are not allowed to on the ferries.
Ferry Passenger Classes:
Salon: Reclining seats. This is a very noisy option and sleeping can be very difficult.
Turista: Very tiny room with four bunks and sink. Everyone in a room must be the same gender and you will be sharing the room with strangers. If you have the cash buy four tickets and then you have a room to yourself.
Cabina: Two bunks and bath

Ferries are loaded "in the front and out the back". Vehicles are often jammed into the ferry. You will have no access to the vehicle during the passage under any circumstances. Keep all equipment inside your vehicle where it will be protected. Be sure to arrive several hours early. Your fee is based upon the overall length of your vehicle. Vehicle lengths are measured in meters. Measure your total length before making reservations. Trailers are included in length. Prices are for one-way travel. No discount for round-trips.
