Rod and Gun probably has the shortest season and fewest sailors of any site with a sensor in the Bay Area. But for Marin and East Bay sailors who want to sail the ripping NW days of spring but do not want to make the long drive to Tomales or Bodega this is the place.

The launch is deceptively attractive with a white sand beach nestled in a tiny cove. But the mud just past the sand is deep and sticky and the rip-rap lined shoreline has sharp debris below the surface. Still the wind is good and the location convenient. The chop is small and the water is pretty flat except on really windy days. The sail sizes range from 4.0 to 5.5 with some spring days stronger. Once the fog arrives this place rarely blows.

The offshore winds are cool in the spring and the Bay is wide at this point. If you break down way outside try to make your way to Marin island. The best season is form mid-spring to Early summer then fades out as summer fog builds. Friendly crowd that is mostly hardcore Larkspur regulars.

The rip-rap lined shoreline means you must be able to return to your launch site. This and the strong offshore wind make this a place for advanced and strong intermediates who can go upwind in overpowering conditions. The water reflects the bottom...dark and muddy. Light winds the first 100-200 feet then strong wind. The sandy rigging area is close to parking and the launch. There is not much to do here but you can get out of the wind and there are benches and sidewalks.

From the East Bay and Sherman Island: Cross the Richmond San Rafael Bridge then follow the instruction above.

This WeatherFlow sensor reports fairly accurate on-the-water conditions. Watch the Tomales Bay sensor early in the day for a hint of what to expect here later in the day.
