Floras Lake Overview
Floras Lake is a spring fed lake with only a sand spit separating it and the Pacific. Winds average 15-25 knots during the summer months out of the Northwest, which are more consistent than winter's Southwest winds. Northwest winds blow fairly consistently from May through September, with Southwest winds prevailing November through March. The months of April and October can be a mixture of both. Light winds in the morning are perfect for the beginners " while afternoons are favored by the intermediate/advanced sailors. Many spots on the north end of the lake are shallow enough to touch, making it great for learning waterstarts. The lake temp is fairly warm in the summer (averaging 68-70 degrees), but full wetsuits are usually in order because the winds can make it chilly once out of the water.
The launch site for sailors is a grassy/sandy lakes' edge. The beach on the other side of the lake is more wind protected and nice for young families. The lake depth is more gradual on that side, which is nice for little wading bodies.
The campground at Floras is filled with windsurfing families all summer long, so it's fun for the young non-sailing members of the family, too!

Maps & Directions
Floras Lake is easily found by heading south on HWY 101. Coming from the Portland area, take I-5 south all the way to Roseburg. Turn onto HWY 42 heading west towards the coast. This will wind you approx. 60 miles to the junction of HWY 101 just south of Coos Bay. Head south on HWY 101 for another 30 miles into the town of Langlois. After passing Floras Creek, look for the turn off to Boice Cope County Park on the right hand side. Follow this road about a mile before taking a final right hand turn leading into the campground.

Sensor Notes
This sensor is located right at the main launch site on Floras Lake. Walking down the pathway leading from the campground, it is easy to spot the large fence leading into the windsurfing school. At the end of the fence, a sensor pole sits right at the water's edge w/ 3 different anemometers mounted upon it. This site provides an excellent reading of north, south and westerly directions. Winds out in the center of the lake may actually gust a few knots higher. Overall, this reading should be quite representative of what to expect upon arrival.
