...high surf advisory now in effect until 6 pm edt thursday...

* location...ocean exposed beaches on the south coasts of
  massachusetts and rhode island including cape cod and the
  islands.

* timing...through thursday.

* surf and rip current risk...long period southerly swells from
  distant hurricane maria will result in high surf and a high risk
  of dangerous rip currents through wednesday. swell heights of 7
  to 11 ft with periods of 10 to 15 seconds will continue through
  thursday.

* shoreline impacts...viewers of large surf should stay in safe
  areas well away from possible splashover. individual waves may
  be more than twice the average wave height...which can sweep a
  person into the water from what may seem to be a safe viewing
  area. falling into turbulent and sometimes rocky waters can
  result in injury that reduces the chance of survival. large
  breakers on area beaches along with some minor beach erosion.

precautionary/preparedness actions...

a rip current...sometimes mistakenly called an undertow...is a
strong but narrow current of water flowing from the beach to the
surf zone. it can rapidly carry a swimmer into deeper water...and
exhaust an individual trying to swim against it.

in addition...viewers of large surf should stay in safe areas
well away from possible splashover. individual waves may be more
than twice the average wave height...which can sweep a person
into the water from what may seem to be a safe viewing area.

...high surf advisory now in effect until 6 pm edt thursday...
...high rip current risk now in effect through thursday
afternoon...

* locations...atlantic ocean beaches from nassau county east
  through suffolk county.

* rip current risk...high

* surf height...7 to 9 feet.

* timing...through at least wednesday. the dangerous conditions
  may persist through thursday. both the advisory and high risk
  may need to be extended.

* impacts...coastal roads may experience washover from time to
  time. minor beach erosion is expected with localized moderate
  beach erosion possible.

precautionary/preparedness actions...

rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore...which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the
sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. talk to lifeguards and beach officials to
learn about any surf hazards and heed their advice. pay attention
to flags and posted signs and swim in life guarded areas.

if you become caught in a rip current...yell for help. remain
calm...do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. if you have to swim out of a rip current...swim parallel to
shore. once you are away from the force of the rip current...
begin to swim back toward the beach. do not attempt to swim
directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.

a high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area...producing rip currents and localized beach
erosion.
