monday...

the national weather service in taunton has issued a coastal flood advisory...
which is in effect from 10 pm this evening to 2 am edt monday.

* location...east coast of massachusetts from boston southward, including the
  cape and nantucket.

* tidal departure...between one half to one foot.

* timing...around the time high tide tonight, which is around midnight.

* coastal flood impacts...minor flooding of more vulnerable coastal areas.

precautionary/preparedness actions...

a coastal flood advisory is issued for minor coastal flooding of the most
vulnerable shore roads and/or basements due to the height of storm tide or wave
splashover. the majority of roads remain passable with only isolated closures.
there is no significant threat to life...and impact on property is minimal.

...very minor coastal flooding near the time of midnight
tonight...

.a very high astronomical tide of 11.6 feet in portland will 
combine with a light southeasterly flow to produce pockets of very
minor coastal flooding around midnight tonight. flood stage in
portland harbor is 12 feet. minor flooding may occur near the 
wharfs in portland, granite point road in biddeford and the 
backbay streets of hampton, new hampshire.

the national weather service in upton has issued a high rip
current risk, which is in effect from monday morning through
monday evening.

* locations...atlantic beaches of eastern long island.

* rip current risk...high.

* surf height...around 5 feet.

* lightning risk...moderate.

* timing...monday.

precautionary/preparedness actions...

rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore...which occur most often at low spots or breaks in
sandbars and near structures such as groins...jetties...and
piers. talk to lifeguards and beach officials to learn about any
surf hazards and heed their advice. pay attention to flags and
posted signs and swim in life guarded areas.

swim near a lifeguard. if caught in a rip current...relax and
float...and do not swim against the current.  if able...swim in a
direction following the shoreline. if unable to escape...face the
shore and call or wave for help.
