Pleasure Bay Overview
Pleasure Bay itself is a tidal pond, three-quarters of a mile in diameter. Conditions are always flat (1-foot chop in hurricanes). This is NOT a location for learning, beginners, or if you cannot stay upwind due to the limited launch area and kiting traffic. As with any location you are not familiar with, use common sense and ask a local kiter for information on the rules -- they are more than willing to help.
Summertime launching restrictions for Pleasure Bay are as follows... Between Memorial Day and middle of June you cannot launch on the beach before 6pm on weekends. From middle of June through Labor Day, you cannot launch on the beach before 6pm weekdays and weekends. If you are not sure of the restrictions, ask a local kiter or lifeguard that is on duty. The degree of enforcement has increased so please respect the restrictions. On straight South winds, there is a wind hole off to the west from the launch area -- due to the location of an island.
Via Email we learned of a launch near Pemberton coast guard station at Hull Gut. A little pebble beach with a parking lot and dock- just a few blocks east of James Ave in Hull. Please send us more info about other sites in the Boston Harbor area!
The bay is an excellent location for transitioning from lake to ocean sailing. Launch in Dorchester Bay for swells and more wind. No summertime launch restrictions at Kelly's Landing.
