...brief period of dense fog this morning...

patchy fog, locally dense in spots, will continue into the morning
hours. areas along the immediate south coast of massachusetts and
rhode island are likely to be impacted with visibility down as 
low as one quarter mile.

motorists should be prepared when encountering lower visibilities
in spots associated with fog, allowing for increased braking 
distance between vehicles.

...national weather service cold water safety message...

* water temperatures are only in the upper 40s across lake 
  champlain, and in the lower 50s in the regions smaller lakes and 

* the cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to 
  anyone immersed in the water. according to the us coast guard, 
  when the water temperatures are below 50 degrees, the chance of 
  immediate incapacitation due to cold shock is extremely high. 
  anyone on small boats, canoes or kayaks should plan accordingly 
  if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this 
  threat. paddle smart from the start and always wear your life 

* south winds will shift to northwest later this morning with gusts
  up to 20 mph. if boating on large bodies of water, these winds can
  increase the likelihood of overturning your boat,canoe or kayak 
  due to increased wave heights.

east through 9 am.

anyone out driving early this morning should be ready for rapid 
fluctuations in visibility. use low beam headlights or fog lamps 
when encountering fog, and allow extra braking distance in case 
sudden stops are needed.
