although land temperatures will be near 70 degrees today and in the
70s on wednesday, water temperatures are still around 40 degrees. in
addition, the warm air passing over the colder waters will result
in the formation of fog, and this fog will restrict visibilities,
especially away from land.

boaters, including kayakers, should remember to dress for the water
temperature, not the air temperature, and especially not the inland
air temperature. this is because the sudden immersion in cold water
can result in hypothermia and death. hypothermia occurs when the
body's core temperature falls to 95 degrees f or colder.

hypothermia affects the brain, heart, lungs, and other vital organs.
severe hypothermia causes loss of consciousness and may result in
death. cold water is especially dangerous because loss of body heat
occurs 25 times faster in cold water than in cold air.

the u.s. coast guard strongly urges the public to wear life jackets
anytime while out on the water and to check weather conditions
before heading out. having proper survival gear while underway and
and filing a float plan with a family member or friend is strongly
recommended.
