Geographically, the site is located along the northeastern edge of Back Bay, the northern most inland bay in the series of sounds that runs along the Outer Banks. But most view Sandbridge from an accessibility standpoint, and that makes it a part of Tidewater. The bay is an excellent shallow water sailing spot. However, its main limitation is the difficult access for the general public. To sail at Sandbridge, you must either park at the public lot by the fishing pier and then walk your equipment through a path in the marsh back to the bay or contact local sailor John Peterson by email (jmpeterson@kaufcan.com) or phone office 757-624-3003 or cell 757-581-3885 for permission to use his private RV site directly on the bay. Once there, you'll find a sandy bottom launch excellent for teaching. Like Nags Head, southwest winds blow the strongest, especially in the spring with the onset of thermals.
Sandy, shallow bay excellent for teaching beginners
Restrooms and concession areas available across the street at the ocean beach.
Good surfing location at the ocean.

To get to the sailing sites at Sandbridge, turn onto Sandbridge Road (Route 629) from General Booth Road. Be sure to follow the signs when on Sandbridge Road. Once into the town of Sandbridge, go south to the city park or by prior arrangement with John Peterson to Lot 126 at the Outdoor Resorts campground.

Located atop a private RV at the south end of Sandbridge, the sensor is about 15 feet above the water and accurately reads south winds, clockwise to north winds. Winds from the southeast to northeast are somewhat gusty and diminished, so using this site for ocean winds is limited.
