open lake forecast for lake michigan
national weather service milwaukee/sullivan wi
334 am cst mon feb 23 2026
for waters beyond five nautical miles of shore on lake michigan.
waves are provided as a range of significant wave heights, which
is the average of the highest 1/3 of the wave, along with the
average height of the highest 10% of the waves which will
occasionally be encountered.
.synopsis...
stronger northwesterly winds will continue early this morning, as
strong low pressure deepens to around 28.6 inches off the mid-
atlantic coast, and strong high pressure moving into ontario
builds to around 31.1 inches. gales expected to continue across
the southern two- thirds of the open waters of lake michigan, and
a gale warning remains in effect into midday today. with the
brisk conditions, moderate freezing spray is expected, with brief
periods of heavy freezing spray possible in the central to
northern third of the lake.
weakening high pressure around 30.6 inches will continue to push
eastward through the day today, with winds gradually easing
overnight. southerly winds look to develop across the lake
tuesday, as low pressure deepening to around 29.3 inches shifts
from the dakotas to across lake superior and northern lake
michigan tuesday afternoon and evening.
winds will shift more west northwest behind the low and
associated cold front. winds gusting up to around 30 knots are
expected during this time, and while potential is lower, still
cannot rule out a few gale force gusts later tuesday into early
wednesday morning.
