open lake forecast for lake michigan
national weather service milwaukee/sullivan wi
915 am cdt sun apr 19 2026

for waters beyond five nautical miles of shore on lake michigan.

waves are provided as a range of significant wave heights, which
is the average of the highest 1/3 of the wave, along with the
average height of the highest 10% of the waves which will
occasionally be encountered.

.synopsis...

high pressure around 30.4 inches tracking southeastward across
saskatchewan and manitoba will push a cold front across the lake
by midday, with southwest winds ahead of the front and northwest
winds arriving behind it. gusty winds are expected behind the
cold front into this afternoon, particularly over far northern
and southern portions of the lake. winds subside and veer north
later this afternoon into tonight, as the high approaches. it
crosses the lake later tonight into monday morning, leading to
light and variable winds.

low pressure around 29.1 inches tracks along the southern edge of
hudson bay monday afternoon into tuesday, working with the
departing high to bring breezy south winds over lake michigan.
a few gales cannot be ruled out monday evening into early tuesday
morning, particularly over the northern third of the lake.

a passing trough of low pressure leads to a period of variable
winds later tuesday. weak high pressure over ontario then forces
a weak backdoor cold front across the lake tuesday night, with
light north to northeast winds continuing into wednesday morning.

winds should become southeast to south and increase later in the
week, as strong low pressure around 29.2 inches develops in the
northern plains.
