coastal hazard message
national weather service san francisco bay area
839 pm pst sat feb 25 2017

...long period swell brings threat of sneaker waves sunday
morning...

.a long period swell arriving sunday morning, along with fair
weather and light morning winds, will bring a moderate risk of
sneaker waves to north bay and bay area coastal beaches. arrival
of the long period swell will coincide with a rapidly rising tide
on sunday morning, pushing more energy up the beach. west and
northwest facing and steep sloped beaches will be at greatest
risk. the threat is expected to abate in the afternoon as the
tide drops, onshore winds develop, and long period waves
transition to shorter periods.

...beach hazards statement remains in effect from 3 am pst sunday
through sunday afternoon...

* hazards...sneaker waves.

* timing...early sunday morning through sunday evening. peak
threat will be mid to late sunday morning.

* location...west facing beaches from ano nuevo northward.

* potential impacts...people being pulling into a cold turbulent
  ocean...unwillingly.

precautionary/preparedness actions...

a beach hazard statement for sneaker waves means that conditions
are present to support a heightened risk of unsuspecting beach
goers being swept into the sea by a wave. people walking along
the beach should never turn their back to the ocean. fisherman
should avoid fishing from rocks or jetties.
