The government agency that operates the monitoring sites got back to me. She pointed me towards the same site some of you have, adding that their budget restrictions are responsible for the shutdown of many sites, even in this case those near heavy population (i.e., recreation) centers. She acknowledged that ignorance of water temps puts water users at risk, but was too nice for me to ask her just whose taxes pay for this stuff in the first place ... i.e., just whom are the supposed beneficiaries of a government agency's efforts?
OTOH, how many recreational water users pay ANY attention to the weather anyway? There were many people out on SUPs, kayaks, canoes, etc. recently when the temps were in the mid-90s, their snow-white bare winter skin burning in the blinding midday sun, not a (required) PFD in sight, completely unaware that the water temp was in the mid-50s and the wind forecast was for gusts over 40 mph.
Maybe Tha Guv'ment knows more than we give them credit for. |
