What is the piece or type of material used to stiffen up the foot of some sails?

It's reinforcing to prolong the life of the sail. The stiffness is a side effect of additional material.

Purple area? I see blue and yellow.

The blue area consists of several overlapping dacron patches. The X-ply may also be sandwiched inside. When all of those patches are stacked on top of one another, the end result is a very stiff (and strong) area of the sail, which is needed to support the downhaul tension and general sailing/abuse loads.
