Aloha, We here on Maui have been feeling the growing pains associated with the explosion of wingfoiling here. In an effort to mollify the parties affected by this (windsurfers, kiters, fishermen, canoe clubs) we put up a guide to explain things for everyone's benefit. This guide covers some of the launches (but not all), etiquette, conditions, tide concerns, etc... I hope this will be of help to anyone planning a trip here to foil. Here is the URL where it can be accessed:

https://tinyurl.com/4t8r9b9t

Also, in case anyone is considering learning the sport here, we have an ideal place for that in the Kahului Harbor. Unfortunately this has not set well with the local canoe clubs as the last thing in the world a canoe team wants to deal with is beginner foilers. For that reason we are attempting to establish rules to avoid conflict, which includes not foiling in the harbor when established canoe team practice and events are occurring. Their current schedule is clarified here:

The actual times for the kids paddling program is 3:30 -5:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The adult paddling program is Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays, 5:00-7:00.

When the canoes are in the water they criss cross along the shoreline/launch area from both directions at full speed. If you are a novice and cannot wingfoil in control and stay on the far side of the harbor, then you should stay away from Wingfoiling in the harbor on these days:
3:30 -5:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and also Thursday, and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays, from 5:00-7:00pm.

Steve

Nice guide. I hope you have better luck than we do at our local lake.
Windsurfers have coexisted with fishermen and swimmers since the mid 80's. We have a good working relationship with the park staff. Now, with the influx of wingers and the low water levels, our launch area has been reduced to 20/30 yard between red markers that the rangers placed on the beach. The swim beach is up wind of the launch. Some of the wingers walk up wind and launch in the swim area while swimmers are in the water. We locals have made an effort to inform them of the rules of the beach. This doesn't seem to work to often. I understand the need for beginners to get up wind to start. That said, we all need to share access to the water and follow the rules. If not, sooner rather than later the rangers will forced to close this beloved sailing spot. It happened to many sites with kites and could happen again.

At this point, the lake is so low the sailing area is pretty much dry.

Thanks, we're trying to get ahead of the situation. Talking to mariners involved with the harbor, canoe club members. One person suggested anyone who wants to use the harbor donate $100 to the canoe club for a free pass for a year. Mostly for locals, but everyone wins. I don't use the harbor much but it is a good safe place for when the winds are crazy strong. I would pitch in.

Hope your situation improves and that the renegades get some sense.

Steve

It does sort of works both ways here. The swimmers don't always stay out of the launch area. If there is an injury caused by us, the park staff isn't going to ban swimming. And it won't matter if the swimmer was in the launch area or not...Just sayin

Yes the good old days of just sailing/boating and swim use issues... Now we have bigger things to deal with in the Swim/Launch zone at Lopez. Really like your guidelines. Ours should include "Don't drive thru the Launch Zone".
