They closed Rowena yesterday (all Oregon state parks, including day use areas), and likewise Hood River parks are closed. Can Rock Creek, the Hatchery, and Stevenson be far behind? |

We will promise to stay a mast length away from our fellow sailors. It is essential that we get on the water. |

Just how do the authorities "close" a launch?
Do they think a cardboard sign is going to stop us?
Do they post armed guards at each site?
If so, will they be there at dawn and dusk?
What are the penalties for ignoring signs?
How does this apply to federal (Corps) parks?
Or to wild launches, which pose zero virus risk to anyone?
What POSSIBLE harm can three people 50 feet apart do to themselves or anyone else?
Don't they realize that if the only risk is to ourselves (e.g., sailing virtually alone, staying far apart on the shore), windsurfing is FAR more important to us than their little pandemic ... that many of us have taken much greater risks and called them "fun"?
Where the hell are we? Russia? North Korea? Cuba? California?
I have no intention of stopping. There are too many other ways to eliminate risk to others and to myself without letting panic wipe out what could, every year, be my last season of WSing. I understand the valid concept of interrupting the virus transmission path, but one or two guys driving separately to an otherwise empty launch make zero difference.
My next step is writing the Portland Corps commander with suggestions and rationale for eliminating risks without literally closing its parks. |

The "risk" is not about windsurfing or rigging.
It's about attracting others out, and people like to congregate.
It's about increasing traffic and parking, clogging empty lots and deserted roads so medical related vehicles have to slow down.
It's about us needing help during a breakdown or injury, splitting attention away from C care needs.
And if a traffic accident occurs...... |

I suppose those are valid concerns in jam-packed parts of the country. I can hike and ride my hypothetical horse (with unleashed dogs) for miles in the suburban canyon I live on, and windsurf for hours at some venues, without seeing a home or another person within half a mile, if at all. My outdoor recreation needn't affect one other person or the hundredth decimal point in a coronavirus curve if I use my head. That's all a big part (not to mention the astronomical differences in traffic, cost of living, and other such factors) of why so many millions of us wouldn't live in the crowded areas our legislators and media personnel regard as normal. |

Ha ha....
I've been detained, arrested, but never formally charged, for my pursuit of sport while the authorities decided to impose a curtain ban. Maybe over a dozen instances. |

That's the upside to most types of closures. Barring significant incarceration, their most noticeable impact is usually tamping down -- sometimes eliminating altogether -- crowds. I go places to play, not party, so reduced crowds are a positive.
