AG Merrick Garland denounces election worker threats as DOJ charges over a dozen people

Quote:

Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday spoke out against rising threats against election workers as the Department of Justice's specialized task force announced a ninth conviction as it seeks to combat the problem.

Driving the news: The DOJ announced Thursday that two men in two separate cases in Arizona and Georgia had pleaded guilty to threatening election officials in Arizona and Georgia in separate cases, brought by the the Justice Department's Election Threats Task Force — which has now brought charges in 14 cases.

These include a 2.5-year prison sentence handed down on Monday to an Iowa man, who left voicemails threatening to "hang" officials including former Attorney General of Arizona Mark Brnovich.

On Thursday, an Ohio man pleaded guilty to sending a death threat to an election official with the Arizona secretary of state's office and a Texas man pleaded guilty to "posting a message online threatening several Georgia public officials following the 2020 election," per the DOJ.

Zoom out:Nevadaask force has reviewed over 1,000 contacts reported as hostile or harassing by the election community and about 11% of these met the threshold for a federal criminal investigation as of Aug. 1, according to the Justice Department.

58% of the total of potentially criminal threats were in key seven key 2020 election battleground states that underwent "post-election lawsuits, recounts, and audits, notes the DOJ, which names them as: Arizona, Georgia, Colorado, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Nevada, and Wisconsin.
What they're saying: "A functioning democracy requires that the public servants who administer our elections are able to do their jobs without fearing for their lives," Garland said in a statement.

"The Justice Department will continue to investigate and prosecute those who target election officials and election workers as part of our broader efforts to safeguard the right to vote and to defend our democracy."

“He crossed the line” – Barr says Trump’s lawyers informed him election plotting would land him in lifelong legal jeopardy

Quote:
“He crossed the line” – Barr says Trump’s lawyers informed him election plotting would land him in lifelong legal jeopardy
Former Attorney General Bill Barr spoke to Neil Cavuto on Fox News and explained that Trump’s own lawyers in the White House warned him that his actions would lead to spending “the rest of his life tangling with the criminal justice process.”

Barr talks about his resignation
The former AG told Fox News, “I resigned on December 14 because I thought that at that point, the state votes were certified, and that was the end of the legal process.”

The Big Lie
He then added, “I also didn’t like the way he was spouting the ‘Big Lie.'”

At first, Barr thought Trump was irresponsible
The former AG who served under Bush and Trump stated, “I thought that was irresponsible. But he took it much further than even I expected, or anyone expected.”

Mitt Romney Makes Shocking Claims About Donald Trump Impeachment

Quote:
Mitt Romney revealed concerning new details about Donald Trump's impeachment proceedings while speaking with his biographer, McKay Coppins, prior to the release of Romney: A Reckoning.

Coppins claimed the Utah senator shared numerous accounts surrounding the topic of GOP members in Congress being terrified to vote to convict or impeach Trump because they feared retaliation from his supporters.

Mitt Romney told his biographer that some GOP Republicans in Congress had been afraid to vote to impeach Donald Trump.mega

"One of the biggest revelations to me in my conversations with Romney was just how important the threat of political violence was to the psychology of elected Republicans today," Coppins explained in a recent interview with Brian Stelter.

Coppins noted that Romney told him "story after story about Republican members of Congress, Republican senators, who at various points wanted to vote for impeachment—vote to convict Trump or vote to impeach Trump—and decided not to, not because they thought he was innocent, but because they were afraid for their family’s safety."

"They were afraid of what Trump supporters might do to them or to their families," the author added, noting that situation "raises a really uncomfortable question."

"How long can the American project last if elected officials from one of the major parties are making their political decisions based on fear of physical violence from their constituents?" he asked.

Aside from the contents of his biography, Romney hasn't kept his concerns about Trump a secret. In a recent interview, the politician claimed he didn't think he'd ever heard "a single member of my caucus, the Republicans in the Senate, say ‘you know, Donald Trump is great. Aren’t we lucky to have him as our leader?’"

"Donald Trump represents a failure of character, which is changing, I think in many respects, the psyche of our nation, and the heart of our nation," he continued. "That’s something which takes a long time, if ever, to repair."

"Character counts, the character of our leaders makes a difference, and it shapes the character of our country," he added. "That’s the party I’ve come from, and I don’t recognize that in the great majority of our party today."

Despite his open criticism of Trump and his failed campaigns for the presidency in 2008 and 2012, Romney confirmed he will not be running again — unless there were very specific and extreme circumstances at play.

"Perhaps if Godzilla comes in and removes all the other candidates and so forth, but other than Godzilla stepping in, no I’m not running for president, not giving it any thought," he joked.

Vanity Fair reported the interview with Coppins.

The indictment returned Oct. 25 and unsealed Monday accuses Arthur Ray Hanson II of Huntsville of leaving threatening voicemails for Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat on Aug. 6. Reached by phone Monday, Hanson, 59, said he is not guilty of the charges.

Judge and clerk in Trump civil fraud trial have received hundreds of ‘serious and credible’ threats

Quote:
The New York judge overseeing Donald Trump’s civil fraud trial and his law clerk have received hundreds of harassing messages that court security has deemed “serious and credible” since the former president began publicly criticizing court staff.

Since October 3, when Trump posted on social media a baseless allegation about Judge Arthur Engoron’s law clerk, threats against the judge “increased exponentially” and were also directed to his clerk, according to Charles Hollon, a court officer-captain in New York assigned to the Judicial Threats Assessment unit of the Department of Public Safety, who signed a sworn statement.

'Marching orders': Ex-GOP staffer says Trump's fans carry out his violent bidding

Quote:
Former President Donald Trump is explicitly directing his supporters to violence — and escalating over time.

That's the urgent warning offered by former GOP staffer Kurt Bardella on Wednesday's edition of MSNBC's "The Beat."

"We hear really alarming and horrific stuff from Donald Trump all the time, but even I am noting that this latest rhetoric is beyond the pale," said anchor and legal analyst Katie Phang. "Am I an outlier on this?"

"No, it means you have a functioning brain, Katie, and your ears and brain are connected and you're hearing all the things the rest of us normal sane people are hearing," said Bardella, a frequent critic of the former president.
"Let's be clear here — after January 6th we know that it's not just rhetoric, it's not just performative, it's not just, I guess, entertainment, what some people might want to call it," Bardella continued. "This is real. The people that follow Donald Trump, his most ardent supporters, they hear his words and take them as marching orders take them as directions, and as we saw on January 6th, they act on them."

ALSO READ: A convicted January 6 attacker faces prison. So he went to Mar-a-Lago to see Trump first.

"So this isn't just harmless playroom Donald Trump, oh, that's what he does, it's hyperbole. This is dangerous," he added. "The fact that so many people in the Republican Party are willing to whitewash what happened January 6th tells me their plan going forward is, if they don't get their way politically, they'll instruct their following to incite violence against the rest of us."

Judge Chutkan Poised to Receive Huge Boost Against Donald Trump

Quote:
The gag order on Donald Trump imposed by U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan in his election interference case is likely to be extended by a three-judge panel during a hearing on Monday, according to a prominent legal expert, which could also strengthen her ability to enforce it.

Chutkan imposed the order in October banning Trump from targeting court staff, special counsel Jack Smith and his team or potential witnesses. The order was briefly lifted following an appeal from Trump's legal team before being reimposed almost immediately after the former president used the time to hit out at Mark Meadows on Truth Social, following reports he will be granted immunity to testify before the grand jury.
In the case being overseen by Chutkan, Trump has pleaded not guilty to four charges: conspiracy to defraud the United States; conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding; obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding; and conspiracy against rights. All four relate to claims Trump broke the law attempting to overturn the 2020 presidential election result, which he continues to baselessly insist was rigged against him despite this claim being repeatedly rejected in court.

‘Not Just Rhetoric’: Steve Bannon and Kash Patel Warn ‘Morning Joe’ Staff That Trump’s Threats of Revenge Are Real

Quote:
Former Trump White House adviser and campaign manager Steve Bannon made clear on his influential far-right podcast Tuesday that if returned to office the former president will indeed make good on his promises to punish his critics in the media – using the United States government.

“ Do you feel highly confident that when you go back and, as a senior member of this administration, President Trump’s administration starting in the afternoon of the 20th of January of 2025, do you feel confident that you will be able to deliver the goods that we can have serious prosecutions and accountability?” Bannon asked former Trump Pentagon appointee Kash Patel.

“And I want the Morning Joe producers that watch us and all the producers to watch us – this is just not rhetoric. We’re absolutely dead serious,” Bannon said directly threatening the MSNBC staffers, adding:
We’re not – you cannot have a constitutional republic and allow what these deep staters have done to the country. The deep state, the administrative state, the fourth branch of government never mentioned in the Constitution, is going to be taken apart, brick by brick and the people that did these evil deeds will be held accountable and prosecuted, criminal prosecutions.

Kash, I know you’re probably going to be head of the CIA. But do you believe that you can deliver the goods on this in a pretty short order of the first couple of months so we can get rolling on prosecutions?

“Yes, we got the bench for it, Bannon, and you know, those guys, I’m not going to go out there and say their names right now so the radical left-wing media can terrorize them,” Patel replied, adding:

But, excuse me, the one thing we learned in the Trump administration, the first go around is we got to put in all American patriots top to bottom and we got them for law enforcement, we got them for intel collection, we got them for offensive operations, we got them for DOD, CIA, everywhere.

And the one thing we will do that they never will do is we will follow the facts and the law and go to courts of law and correct these justices and lawyers who have been prosecuting these cases based on politics and actually issuing them as lawfare.

We will go out and find the conspirators, not just in government but in the media. Yes, we’re going to come after the people in the media who lied about American citizens, who helped Joe Biden rig presidential elections.

“We’re going to come after you, whether it’s criminal or civilly, we’ll figure that out. But yeah, we’re putting you all on notice and Steve, this is why they hate us. This is why we’re tyrannical. This is why we’re dictators because we’re actually going to use the Constitution to prosecute them for crimes they said we have always been guilty of but never have,” Patel concluded.

Watch the full clip above.

Trump wanted staffer 'executed' for leaking he rushed to bunker during protest: ex-aide

Quote:
"The View's" Alyssa Farah Griffin on Thursday briefly mentioned some of the rage that Donald Trump has shown behind closed doors — and how it endangers the United States.

The co-hosts were blasting Republicans for being willing to call Trump a lunatic, but still being willing to vote for him.

Joy Behar brought up former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and the bombshell revelations in her recently released book, "Oath and Honor." Cheney has made it clear that she believes Trump cannot be allowed to be president again because he's a danger to the country. But, The View hosts said, Republican partisans who agree are unwilling to vote for a Democrat.

"One thing she said, it's not just him, it's his enablers," said Behar. "The problem arises because they refuse to impeach him, and Liz Cheney said if it was an anonymous vote they probably would have impeached him, but they're scared to lose their job, and in some cases, there's political violence.
"You can't trust that the Republican Party would go against him if he gets the nomination. Case in point, your friend, Chris Sununu, New Hampshire governor. He suggested he'd vote for Trump if he was the nominee. Why? Because he said, I'm a Republican. Party before country, see? And he said, this is a guy who called Trump bleeping crazy and suggested he should be in a mental institution. That's the Republican Party right now."

But it was Griffin who pulled the political fire alarm, describing the dangers a second Trump administration presents.

"I will not vote for Donald Trump," she said. "And I think that should be a pretty easy thing to say. If you thought the first term of Trump was bad, buckle up. Liz Cheney said we're sleepwalking into dictatorship. I say we're careening into it. Donald Trump told us what to expect in a second term and we need to listen to it."

In the first term, she explained that Trump's worst acts and instincts were stopped due to two major things: First, he had no idea how the federal government worked. Second, he had to get reelected.

"Those things are not the case in a second election," she explained. "He knows how to weaponize the federal government. He's planning to fire civil servants with expertise — non-partisan people — and staff the government with loyalists."

She explained that Trump "has an enemies list, which includes the media."

"He came after MSNBC, he will truly go after the media in a second term," Griffin continued. "And we can't take him lightly, because I can tell you right now — before I resigned, I was in an Oval Office meeting with a dozen other staffers. And somebody had, he thought, leaked a story about him going to the bunker during the George Floyd protests, and he said that the person who did that should be executed.

"He's used that terminology with Gen. [Mark] Milley. I cannot set off enough alarm bells about how dangerous he is and that he must be stopped at all costs."

The White House later claimed that Trump wasn't being rushed to the bunker, he was just "inspecting" it.

'It was so scary': Trump fans at Missouri Caucus 'literally attacked fellow Republicans'

Quote:
Donald Trump supporters at the Missouri Republican Caucus on Saturday attacked fellow attendees who supported the former president's opponent, a prior member of the "grand old party" reported.

Former Lincoln Project veterans affairs adviser Fred Wellman, an ex-Republican and current Democratic campaign consultant, reported the aggressive development on social media. Wellman also recently hit retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, a Trump adviser who played a prominent role in efforts to overturn the 2020 election, with a sanctions bid in a defamation lawsuit.

On Saturday, Wellman conveyed information he said he received via text about the caucus in Missouri.

"I have a friend who attended the Missouri Republican Presidential Caucus today," he wrote Saturday. "They asked Nikki Haley supporters to line up in the middle of the auditorium and were booed and screamed at by the Trump supporters."

He continued: "They attacked fellow Republicans. Feel like democracy to you?"

Quoting a reported follow-up text from the source, Wellman then said, "The woman who spoke for Haley couldn’t stop shaking and crying. It was so scary.”

Someone in the comments wrote to Wellman, "Those Dale Carnegie courses didn't take..." He responded, "Nope. Do you think those folks will vote for Trump in November?"
