Any recommendations on places to camp at the Gorge. Heard the sites by the river are also by the train tracks. |

Yup .. . shore = trains, on both sides. White noise machine ($20) + earplugs = relief. But a lot depends on whether you mean campgrounds or wild spots; both offer train-free camping. Tucker Park south of Hood River is peaceful, as are wild forest spots. The former is easy to find (ask anyone whos used it), the later requires some scouting time.

Viento and Memaloose are the two places closest to Hood River - both have trains. Maryhill park is nice, further from HR and also trains. Id recommend Tucker park like Mike said. Its not by the water but is a nice peacful spot also not far from HR. |

Another almost unknown spot is Brooks Memorial Park. Its about 25 minutes north from Maryhill (out about 10 minutes past Goldendale) and near the top of Satus pass on US97. Its really quiet, dark, secluded and nice and cool at night. A great place if you are sailing the eastern sites (especially Maryhill or Roosevelt) |

Trains can be an issue but I kind of like hearing them roar down the Gorge in the dark at 70mph. It usually only happens once during the night at Viento. You still have sailing within a stones throw and only 6 miles from HR. Viento is also closer to the central Gorge where winds are most likely but if east end is blowing, Peach Beach is a great place to camp (right next to Maryhill State Park and cheaper).
Tucker Park in HR is probably the quietest in the central gorge area.
There was a quiet campground at Mosier. It is up on the hill behind town near the golf course. Not sure if it still in operation. Maybe someone else knows something about it.
Punch in camping in the columbia river gorge into MSN or any search engine for tons of info. |

Theres also Wishbone, by Dougs beach, just west of Lyle a couple hundred yards. You turn off to the north on a road that leads up the klickitat river canyon (I think), its about 3 miles off hwy 14, just follow the signs. Run by a private party, has showers, and portapotties and the best gorge view Ive ever seen from ontop of the bluff where the campground is. Cheap, but the camp host is a bit of a card--be warned, dont encourage conversation with him is my advise.
