Even the pros cant agree on this one. A general rule of thumb-for bump and jump-the length should be about from your elbow to your wrist. Some like it shorter, some longer.

Ive always heard, and liked shorter for higher wind and longer for lighter wind/waves. In light wind, longer lines leave the sail standing taller--more exposed to the wind and leave your body hanging over the water and off the board making the board plane faster. In high winds, a shorter line gives you a more immediate response with your body weight against the sail, it puts more weight over the board and sinks it more but in adequite winds planing ability shouldnt be the problem, it will be control.
Hope that helps. Oh yeah, in 5.0+ conditions I use 18 lines. For light winds I have adjustable lines probably around 20-22. |

It depends on wich type of harness youre using, boom hight and if you like to use the harness to jump or you prefer to unhook.
longuer harness line are better for quick hook/unhook but olso you risk the undesirable hook in the air. Its also a loose connection sailor- rig puts more weight on the board => low speed => not enough for bump and jump.
I like mine at 20 at all conditions, my boom is at chin level, wear waist harness and im 6.0. |
