One point I've not seen BM make is that we may learn something applicable to future swap meets if this cancellation were explained. For those of us who put a LOT of effort and/or driving time to attending them, even one cancellation or no-show is a significant or even major problem. Knowing what has bollixed past swaps, with or without notice, may help us anticipate the next repeat. (For example, multiple HR forecasts for this one suggested an occasional shower. Big whoop; it's the Pacific NW, and this year in particular looks showery all summer.) |

I'm surprised BM let this one go by: This evening's forecast for the Hood River Pray for Wind party is pretty much identical to that of the swap meet: showery. I hope everyone can fit inside the Kickstand if it rains. |

Biggest swap meet I've ever seen, and after 38 years in the Gorge that's saying something. Weather was great, there were probably hundreds of boards and sails ... each ... at prices the rest of the country can't comprehend ... prices I get called a liar for posting. Let's just say there were many world-class-performance boards, several in pristine condition, on sale for less than the price of a good breakfast for one hungry man. Perfectly good carbon boom for less than that guy's breakfast if his skinny wife was with him. Essentially new harnesses for the price of a Big Mac. New wave fins for $10. Huge G-10 slalom weed fins if you want fries with that burger. Deals like that weren't rare; they were common.
Just one, teenie, puzzling problem: relative to the quantity of deals and the complaints we've seen about the dearth of used gear, stuff wasn't moving. It was by FAR a buyers' market. An industry insider may have hit the nail on the head: everybody's switching to foiling.
Another problem was the concern of many -- often intermediate -- sailors who were FAR more concerned about a board's vintage than how well it sails. Even for boards just 4-5 years old, some buyers cared only whether that was a 4 or a 5. One buyer with a $300 budget chose a 2015 board in B condition over a mint 2014 because of the year difference; the 2015 didn't meet his needs, but by golly it was newer. That suggests a third reason, more readily resolved by sellers: education. Sellers need to do more than display a board (often dirty) and maybe a price tag.
Buyers, count your blessings. And do your homework so you know what you're looking at and for. |

A great big round of applause and gratitude to CGW2.org Volunteers and Attendees (Buyers & Sellers) who helped make yesterday's Swap Meet a huge success. As expected, it was a record-breaker! Biggest, bestest, badass swap ever, and contrary to some's opinion about people not buying things..., CGW2.org sold more stuff than it ever has at any previous swap meet, again.., for the 4th time in a row.
As such, we now have some additional storage space to receive donations prior to our next swap meet on Labor Day weekend.
We're seeking donations of two-piece skinny masts, carbon booms & paddles, components and hardware of all types (kite leashes, mast bases & extensions, harness hardware), helmuts, booties, undamaged sail & kiteboards (less than 10 years old) undamaged windsurf sails (less than 10 years old).
Again.., thanks to all. You're the best & CU Sailin' ! _________________ CU Sailin' |

That's great! However, I was looking at the bigger picture ... the OTHER 4 or 5 looong rows of great gear, and I specifically related it to others' dismay at the lack of used gear on the market. Au contraire, the used gear market is arguably flooded. If that's a regional thing, it's a sound reason to visit the Gorge this time of the year. For a sailor needing or wanting a significant quantity of gear, the savings could easily pay for a major road trip or even a flight.

Mostly what I saw carried out was skinny masts with no bags. Impossible to compete with CGW on prices and you can't even give away older gear now unless it's something special. $100 Fiberspar carbon boom in perfect condition nobody wanted. Other than than that it was awesome. |

Amazing how new prices keep going up and swap prices keep going down.
Windsurf boards that retailed for over $2000 selling for under $500.
Kite surfboards that retail over $1000 selling for $200.
The only gear that holds its value is wing gear - since everyone wants to be a winger now. And even that is starting to get cheaper as it gets older and more available. Supply and Demand at its finest. |
