I just finished this book and thought some of you might be interested in it. It is written by Fred Haywood, who is one of the pioneers of windsurfing.
At one time he held the world records for speed and for windsurfing biggest wave ever. He and his friends invented the waterstart, along with lots of other moves and equipment innovations. He and he and his friends opened the first windsurfing shop on Maui, and they organized the first windsurfing competitions on Maui.
The book starts with his growing up on Maui and then moves on to his years as a competitive swimmer, winning the Nationals as a senior in high school and then multiple NCAA championships. After that he writes about his years surfing all over the world. Once the first windsurfing board were being produced, he took up windsurfing and became a professional windsurfer. The book has lots of interesting parts about the early years of our sport. |

SAS, thanks for the tip about the Fred Haywood book.
superkraut, I saw a news article saying a wind surfer died on Lake Isabella, but could not find up any follow up. The article by a local station for Kern County did not even have an I.D. Do you know anything more? |

yes, unfortunately I do: it appeared that one of our most respected local sailors, Doc Roger, suffered a heart attack or some other debilitating medical problem as he was launching his kite. Conditions were a bit gnarly, and help arrived too late. I'll post more details once we get the official report |

Thanks for your recommendation, SAS. I'll get the book this week before I fly back to the Islands next weekend with the missus. It should make for good reading during the flight |
