|
|
My Maui 3.7 & 4.2 Ghost Sails recommend a 17 icms stiffness Mast. I have a Nolimitz 370 skinny that's 15 icms & & older version that's 19 icms.
In my case, would most people notice the difference in not having the recommended stiffness?
Would the softer Mast de-power earlier then ideal? I've never tried the 19 icms with these sails, but probably answer my questions if I did |

Companies have changed, not all but most. It depends on how old your Maui Sails are, if they are stiff top.
Using the wrong mast bend curve: you will lose power range performance ,it depends On how much range the sail has to start with AND how much you are willing to give up

I find most sailmakers have pretty specific mast performance requirements to get the most from their sails. We can all speculate, but your most accurate info will come right from the maker. I would contact them directly and see what they have to say. |

Most sail makers are moving to constant curve .if not there already .
Few exceptions . _________________ K4 fins

Ive been using Maui Sails for over a decade. You can still buy their masts on their web site and they are discounted. A 370 works of your 3.7& 4.2 perfectly.
They do take a fair amount of downhaul. They have changed their masts several years back. I have the ones recommended for the year of my sails.
I dont believe they make a Ghost sail smaller than 4.2 though so I assume your 3.7 is a Legend.
I use a 340 Chinnok mast for 3.5 down. |

Thanks for the replies.Good coincidence with you feedback kurtvr7, I was thinking the same & ordered Maui Sails Gladiator Ultra Mast. Similar carbon content to a Nolimitz & with their sale much cheaper.
Phil McGain thought either Nolimitz 15 or 19 icms would work, just a personal preference.
I don't know why a popular mast like the Nolimitz 370 is even made in 15 icms, when most sail makers recommend a 17 for a 3.7 & 4.2 sail |

Lighter sailors can use softer masts....the big boys out there are better off on the recommended mast or a slightly stiffer one.
