Considering going to Sandy Hook tomorrow. Question? Is the area near the Coast Guard Station accessible or is it off limits to the general public? Can not tell by looking at Google Maps and there is no Streetview? Looks like one could easily sail over to the otherside of the point and play in the rip tides there.

Just checked. It is off limits. May end up down near the ferry landing or Guardian Park.

Lars,

I wouldn't suggest launching from Guardian Park. Look at google earth and you'll see almost the entire shoreline is lined with large stones to control erosion. I've never launched from there but have watched it over the years - great wind exposure but it looks like you get some reflecting wave action from the stone shoreline which makes for chaotic chop near shore. Here is another launch with nice small parking area a little further south that is quite good for predominantly westerly winds:

However, you'll see that virtually everyone launches from Parking Lot C located even further south. Its very easy to sail upwind into more open waters and larger swell from there. At low tide, there is a very shallow sand bar about a 1/4 mile out from this launch so watch out for that (Low tide is around 7:30 in the bay, high tide should be 1:30 ish).
