...slow moving winter storm could bring impacts to portions of
the combined panhandles sunday night through wednesday...

bottom line up top: folks in the texas and oklahoma panhandles
should stay up to date with the latest forecast, and prepare for
potential winter impacts sunday night through wednesday.

a strong cold front is expected to usher in arctic air sunday into
early next week, setting up an unseasonably long period of sub
freezing temperatures. while the arctic airmass settles over the
panhandles, a vigorous storm system will slowly cross the southern
rocky mountains and southern plains which will promote increasing
chances for winter precipitation sunday night possibly extending
through wednesday.

the track and strength of this storm system will largely determine
what type of precipitation will occur, when it will occur, and
amounts. as of this writing, confidence was increasing that the
northwestern half of the combined panhandles would have the best
chance for impacts due to snow, with potentially more impacts due
to a combination of snow, sleet and freezing rain across the
southeastern half. there is still some uncertainty with timing of
impacts, especially beyond monday night. generally light
precipitation could result in some minor travel issues for the
monday morning commute, with increasing chances for impacts
monday night into tuesday morning. as with most longer events like
this, there will be periods where no precipitation occurs at all.

a second round of potentially heavier precipitation could occur
tuesday night into wednesday night as the main upper level system
crosses the area. however, there is still considerable
uncertainty as to whether this precipitation will fall as rain,
snow, or a wintry mix.

...record breaking cold temperatures sunday and monday...

this is a special weather statement from the national weather
service office in riverton.

a strong cold front will move through northern and central wyoming
today and through the south and southwest tonight. behind the
front, temperatures will plummet to record cold levels. the very
cold air will persist over the area through monday night.

low temperatures sunday morning will be in the single digits with
some below zero readings in the mountains. highs sunday will only
be the teens with single digits in the mountains.

monday morning will see colder lows with widespread subzero
temperatures. highs on monday will only be in the 20s with teens
