Just south of the border, Raul's is the place for San Diego windsurfers who need a quick surf fix and don't have the time for a San Carlos road trip. Remember at Raul's you are in Mexico. That means no facilities, no grassy rigging, no parking lot, and no security.

Raul's has a nice point breaks when there is good swell. No crowds & good surfing. There is a rocky shoreline with large rocky bluffs. You carry your gear down a gully to the beach. In the summer, light afternoon breezes are the norm. Water temperatures in the Summer range from 58-62 degrees. In the Spring and Fall, water temperatures range from 55-57.

There can be problems parking and sailing here so keep valuables out of sight and pay a local to watch your parked car. Great fresh lobster down the road at Punta Neuvo.

The key "get-in-the-car-and-go" signal is approx 10-17+ at any time between 10am and 12am. If Raul's hasn't shoed signs of wind by midday then it is generally unlikely to happen. Raul's really picks up south swells well. But, over about 4 feet is a close-out. Sailing conditions are generally side-on at 15-25 MPH. Can occasionally get down-the-line. The usual sail sizes are 5.2-5.8 (5.8 is more typical). Sometimes need 6.5 in the Summer.

If a "Catalina eddy" is predicted (generally associated with South winds in San Diego), Raul's is generally not going to happen. Look for W-NW conditions in San Diego.

Located about 30 miles south of downtown San Diego in Baja Mexico. Cross the U.S boarder in to Mexico and take Mex. Hwy 1 (toll road) to Rosarita/Encenada. (The first time you do this it can be a bit confusing so take your time and watch for signs carefully) Highway 1 takes you west then south along the coast. The toll road cost about $2.50 per stop and begins at La Playa and again at Rosarita. You want to exit the toll road at the Puerto Nuevo exit. This is the first exit after the toll booth at Rosarito. That exit drops you right at Raul's Restaurant. Parking is possible on both sides of the gully. Access to the north side is from a road that runs down the North side of Raul's. Parking here is "free" but often someone comes by and asks for a couple of dollars. Very rough last 50 yards. You can get stuck badly. Don't bother, go the south side. Access to the south side is just 100 yards south of Raul's on the free road. Look for the gate/sign that says "Welcome Surfers" with Ezzy stickers on it. Pay the old lady $3 and don't whine about it. There are generally no problems with theft, maybe sometimes little kids might snatch a hat left lying around. Your vehicle is visible from the water.

There is a clean 360 degrees clearing with mountains some half-mile to the East. This should give good readings unless the wind line is some distance from shore. There are no calibrations at this time and no reports of accuracy have been made.
