open lake forecast for lake michigan
national weather service milwaukee/sullivan wi
916 pm cdt mon aug 31 2026

for waters beyond five nautical miles of shore on lake michigan.

waves are provided as a range of significant wave heights, which
is the average of the highest 1/3 of the wave, along with the
average height of the highest 10% of the waves which will
occasionally be encountered.

.synopsis...

29.5 inch low pressure is located near the ontario-manitoba
border late this evening, and is forecast to continue eastward
toward the southern hudson bay by early wednesday morning. the low
will make its eastward progression as it fills to near 29.8 inches,
resulting in light winds during overnight periods and southerly
gusts between 10-15 knots during the daytime hours. the light
overnight winds, combined with a lingering humid air mass, will
support areas of fog development across lake michigan both tonight
and tuesday night. whether fog will become dense remains
uncertain, with trends being monitored for marine dense fog
advisories during each overnight period. off and on thunderstorms
remain forecast through wednesday morning as a cold front lingers
just to the north of the open waters. widespread severe weather
isn't expected in any thunderstorm activity, though an isolated
stronger cell with hail and gusty winds can't be entirely ruled
out.

winds will shift east-northeasterly through the second half of the
week as 30.1 inch high pressure builds over the hudson bay and
broad, 29.6 inch low pressure moves into the northern great
plains. an unsettled pattern featuring multiple additional
thunderstorm chances will continue through at least friday night.
similar to earlier week storms, widespread severe weather isn't
anticipated, though isolated stronger storms with hail and gusty
winds are possible.
