open lake forecast for lake michigan
national weather service milwaukee/sullivan wi
852 am cdt wed mar 11 2026

for waters beyond five nautical miles of shore on lake michigan.

waves are provided as a range of significant wave heights, which
is the average of the highest 1/3 of the wave, along with the
average height of the highest 10% of the waves which will
occasionally be encountered.

.synopsis...

low pressure around 29.6 inches is tracking into southwest
michigan early this morning turning winds more northerly as the
low passes over far southern lake michigan. gusty northwest winds
are expected this afternoon and evening behind the low. given the
increased potential for gusts to 35 knots, particularly across
eastern portions of the lake, have issued a gale warning.

then winds weaken overnight into early thursday as high pressure
around 30.2 inches briefly moves through the region. then a
strong low pressure around 29.1 inches is then expected to trek
across northern wisconsin into northern michigan thursday night/
friday. increasing southerly winds are expected later thursday
into thursday night ahead of the low. though the cold lake may
dampen the gust potential thursday night, southerly gales will
still be possible. there is a better chance for west to northwest
gales on friday behind the low. thus have issued a gale watch for
this timeframe. could even see a few gusts approach storm force
per latest models.

winds are expected to ease friday night into saturday as high
pressure around 30.2 inches moves in from the northwest. another
strong low pressure system is likely to move through the region
late in the weekend into early next week, with another round of
gales possible.
