open lake forecast for lake michigan
national weather service milwaukee/sullivan wi
916 pm cdt fri sep 11 2026

for waters beyond five nautical miles of shore on lake michigan.

waves are provided as a range of significant wave heights, which
is the average of the highest 1/3 of the wave, along with the
average height of the highest 10% of the waves which will
occasionally be encountered.

.synopsis...

southerly winds will continue to increase overnight, as a cold
front approaches the region from the west. winds will shift out
of the west northwest during the day saturday, as the cold front
moves across the lake. expecting wind gusts to remain primarily in
the 25 to 30 knot range overnight through saturday, though a few
gusts approaching gale force may occur. currently anticipating
any such gusts to remain brief and isolated enough to preclude the
need for gale warnings, but will continue to monitor trends.
isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible ahead of the
approaching cold front, mainly over northern portions of the lake.

high pressure around 30.2 inches will build in from the northern
great plains sunday night into monday, bringing decreasing winds
saturday night through sunday, and light and variable winds
sunday night into monday. the high will move east of the waters
monday afternoon and evening, resulting in a south southeast wind
shift.

winds will increase further and veer south southwest monday night
into tuesday, as low pressure around 29.4 inches develops over
manitoba. gales continue to appear likely during this time frame,
with headlines becoming necessary in later forecasts if trends
continue to hold. periods of showers and thunderstorms will
accompany the developing low from as early as monday evening
through at least tuesday afternoon. widespread severe weather
hazards appear low over lake michigan at this time, though an
isolated stronger storm with gusty winds may occur. winds will
trend northerly behind a cold front tuesday night into wednesday,
steadily tapering away from gale force thresholds in the process.
