open lake forecast for lake michigan
national weather service milwaukee/sullivan wi
857 pm cst thu jan 8 2026
for waters beyond five nautical miles of shore on lake michigan.
waves are provided as a range of significant wave heights, which
is the average of the highest 1/3 of the wave, along with the
average height of the highest 10% of the waves which will
occasionally be encountered.
.synopsis...
low pressure around 29.2 inches is currently centered over
southeastern iowa, and is expected to lift into the northern half
of lake michigan late tonight. expect southeasterly winds to
continue across the southern half, with easterly winds across the
northern half through late tonight as low pressure approaches,
then expect winds to veer southwesterly across the entire lake
before shift rapidly to become northwesterly as low pressure
exits. gusts to 30 kt are expected, with isolated gales also
expected starting early friday morning along this front,
especially along the eastern lakeshore regions.
winds will gradually weaken friday afternoon as high pressure
around 30.2 inches works its way across lake michigan through
friday night. meanwhile, an area of low pressure lifting through
the southern plains and an additional area of low pressure digging
into the upper midwest will interact, merging over the great
lakes region into saturday. expect west-northwesterly winds over
lake michigan to increase on the backside of this deepening area
of low pressure as it lift into eastern ontario/quebec. will be a
potential for gales across the open water, but still some
uncertainty on the overall strength of the low pressure. another
area of high pressure will build across the region for sunday
before another low traverses the region early next week.
