Cabarete Overview
Located on the north coast of the island, Cabarete was just a small fishing town until the late 1980's. A group of windsurfers discovered the near perfect conditions in Cabarete bay and the city exploded in growth solely on word of mouth marketing. Today, Cabarete is frequently host to the world's top kiteboarding, surfing, and windsurfing championships. Visitors from all over the world come to Cabarete to enjoy its warm tropical waters and consistent trade winds. Cabarete is also close to other world-class sporting activities such as scuba-diving, motocross riding, golfing, horseback riding, canyoning, and wakeboarding. People from all over have discovered that Cabarete is one of the top adrenaline places in the world.
In addition to sporting activities, Cabarete is home to one of the Caribbean's hottest nightlifes. The town boasts a 1 mile stretch of beachfront outdoor bars, discos, and restaurants. At night, visitors and locals can be found partying the night away on the beach listening to music from all over the world. In addition, Cabarete can quickly transform its beach into one huge outdoor party stage where world-renowned international DJ's spin tracks into the night. One of the best places to stay and experience Cabarete is at eXtreme Hotels. eXtreme is located directly on Kite Beach and is home to Cabarete's best kite school and Kite Beach's hottest bar. Kiters looking for the ultimate experience will find themselves amongst the hottest pro riders at the eXtreme lounge -- the hotel is the frequent destination of top kitesurfing pros and the hotel sponsors its own eXtreme riding team with riders such as Hamish McDonald. Riders of all levels are encouraged to hang with the pros at the lounge and even ask the eXtreme team for riding tips. The eXtreme riders are even rumored to give free lessons.
The wind in Cabarete is like the trade winds of Hawaii and are consistently sideonshore. Cabarete can have wind year round but the trade winds are the strongest from mid-may to September when the winds can reach 30+ knots. The wind generally is light in the mornings and becomes stronger in the afternoons. The wind speed can vary from light in the mornings, getting stronger in the afternoon, then light again at sunset. Kite Beach is protected by a small reef about 1000 feet from the shore so that the water can remain relatively calm. Beginners can have a great time inside the reef while more advanced riders can be entertained at the outer reef by the waves.
