I have to admit to a certain level of frustration with the fake news about vaccines. The science of vaccination goes back to Lister, and the human health benefits of vaccination are immense. Smallpox has been eliminated and polio was nearly eliminated before religious and paranoid fanatics in various countries brought it back. I'm in the age group where the natural immunity afforded by having suffered through measles as a kid doesn't protect you against shingles. I found this op ed piece in the SF Chronicle this morning--from someone who actually knows what they are writing about. Worth posting.

Quote:
Anthony Fauci didn't get the hero's sendoff he deserved. So it goes in the world of public health
Steven Solter
Jan. 4, 2023

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, says U.S. health officials are considering adding a negative coronavirus test to the current five-day isolation restrictions for asymptomatic people who contract the virus.

After more than half a century of service at the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Anthony Fauci has finally retired. Regrettably, after helping to guide the country through one of the deadliest pandemics in global history, Fauci and his life’s work didn’t receive the hero’s sendoff they deserve. Instead, news of his retirement was largely subsumed by the American culture wars, as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued critiques of COVID vaccines, Congress reversed the U.S. military’s COVID vaccine mandate, and personal attacks were thrown at Fauci himself from every direction.

This is a disturbing, but relatively novel outcome in public health, where, despite the incredible stakes, even the most influential in the field generally labor in anonymity. If we step back and look at the bigger picture of how vaccines and immunization have saved hundreds of millions of lives over the past two centuries, it becomes easier to put the current debate over Fauci’s legacy into perspective.

Three individuals in particular made enormous contributions to human survival in the 20th century, yet their names are far from being widely recognized today.

Only one of these unsung heroes is still living — Bill Foege. His main claim to fame is the role he played in the eradication of smallpox, arguably the most lethal virus in human history — and the only human disease that has, to date, been completely eliminated.

Foege didn’t develop the original smallpox vaccine – that honor went to Edward Jenner in 1796. But, as we have seen with COVID, convincing people to take vaccines, and the logistical challenge of distributing them to the neediest, is often just as confounding as inventing the shot itself.

Foege developed the strategy that finally overcame these challenges with smallpox – called “ring vaccination.”

In the late 1960s, India had the largest number of smallpox cases in the world. To protect the nation from the virus, public health officials attempted the daunting task of visiting each of the country’s 500,000 villages to make sure that everyone was vaccinated. This strategy, however, proved logistically impossible; as babies were born and grew up, many would inevitably get infected before a vaccination team could circle back to their village and inoculate them.

Foege spotted and was able to exploit a crucial weakness in the smallpox virus. It was much less contagious than other confounding viruses, such as measles. So instead of 100% immunization, he proposed surveillance to identify and isolate infected people while they were still contagious. Officials could then immunize those living in the nearest 50 households, and could thus interrupt the spread of the disease.

This was the barrier “ring” in ring vaccination.

I spent my career in public health, and was one of thousands of full-time smallpox workers employing this strategy in Bihar state in India in 1974-1975. The great majority of my fellow workers were locals hired to spot every case of smallpox in the state. It was an enormous undertaking, both in Bihar and in other parts of India — as well as in Bangladesh, Somalia, and elsewhere. But it was successful; smallpox was eradicated throughout the world in 1977.

Anyone who has seen first-hand what smallpox looks like, as I have, and who witnessed how vaccination eliminated this horrific disease, believes that immunization should be regarded as one of the great triumphs of humankind.

Before Foege came Maurice Hilleman, who was responsible for developing more than 40 vaccines, including measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, meningitis, pneumonia, and Haemophilus influenza. His vaccines have been credited with saving millions of lives and with greatly reducing common childhood diseases. Working for the pharmaceutical company Merck, beginning in 1957, Hilleman and his team developed new, highly effective vaccines at a rate never equaled anywhere or at any time.

That Hillman worked in the private sector for “Big Pharma” would likely make him controversial today. But his vaccines changed the world for the better.

The final unsung hero in the annals of immunization was Jim Grant, director of UNICEF from 1980 until 1995. During his tenure, Grant launched the “Child Survival Revolution,” which shifted the world’s focus into getting vaccines into the arms of children. In 1980, only about 20% of the world’s children were fully vaccinated by their first birthday. By 1990 the proportion of fully vaccinated children had risen to 80%. Global infections fell accordingly.

Grant was successful in part because he cannily focused his amazing energy and deep concern for child survival on the wives of leaders in developing countries. These “first ladies” were able in turn to convince their husbands of the importance of immunization in reducing needless child deaths, which made an enormous difference.

A true list of unsung heroes of immunization should also include the literally millions of vaccinators who every day provide the world with the miracle of immunization. Many of these workers throughout the world — who are often volunteers or paid very little — risk their lives in places like the Afghan-Pakistan border, where some have been murdered over rumors, suspicions and false information. Still, they carry on.

Fauci was owed better than his recent time in the spotlight gave him. Other heroes of immunization deserve better, too.

Far from villainy or anonymity, these figures should be an inspiration to all of us.

Steven Solter is a retired public health physician who worked for Management Sciences for Health for 33 years, spending most of this time in Asia to reduce child mortality.

Enjoy this unaltered classic from the greatest political photoshopper ever, David Dees (RIP).

FYI, this was drawn way before Fauci's Coronavirus scam #2. Actually, I think it was released just after the Swine Flu scam #2 (Fauci's first, in 2009). Which just so happened to be the event which brought yours truly into the light Shocked

Is he really that stupid/crazy—or does he get paid by a Russian troll farm to post this nonsense?

The sad thing is that vaccines have saved millions of lives, including from Covid. We can’t see the full toll of the rising death rate in China which is caused by low vaccination rates. And hidden by authoritarianism.

Right wing paranoids and fools are proposing steps that will take, not save lives. Incapable of understanding math and science, they declare themselves as smart as Fauci. Most stupid people have no idea how stupid they are.

Oh yeah sure. Fauci is WICKED SMAAHT, huh. That despicable vile creature deserves nothing less than 5 consecutive eternities in hell ... one for each phony pandemic attempt! (1 for 5 is really bad, eh?) Plus an extra 100 years for his sick demented experiments torturing beagles.

Maybe you'll meet him there someday. You can get his autograph!

Once again, an epic offering from the great Ben Garrison, properly resized for your IW viewing displeasure. OMG, this dude is so badass. And prolific!

This particular "vaccine" is genetic manipulation. It's degrading people's ability to fight other disease. So many people are dying as a result. This isn't political Mac. The death rates for under 65 is up 18%. England and Germany are beginning to wake up.

People who watch Tucker Carlson make him rich—and themselves stupid.

Stick to business and leave science to others:

Gene therapies involve making deliberate changes to a patient’s DNA in order to cure or alleviate a genetic condition. This can be by adding a functional copy of a gene, disabling a gene that makes a faulty product or changing gene activation.

The mRNA from the vaccines does not enter the cell nucleus or interact with the DNA at all, so it does not constitute gene therapy.

Gene therapies can have long-lasting effects because they permanently change the cell’s DNA, with these changes being inherited by any daughter cells that result if the cell divides. In contrast, mRNAs are always transitory and are not inherited by daughter cells, making them ideal for use in vaccines.

OK, enough satire. It seems that almost everyone here really needs a history lesson. I repeatedly write that his unholy evilness has participated in no less than 5 attempts at a phony pandemic, and no one says BOO. Is that because y'all know/fear the truth, but are afraid to challenge it? Or are you just that naive?

From the top, shall we? Swine Flu I, 1976. Fauci has been with the NIH for a couple years already, but still is not the director. His involvement is not clear, yet not so unpredictable either ...

Anyone recall when "60 minutes" was a thing of honest journalism? This classic episode from 1979 should shed a bit of light to anyone who HONESTLY wants to learn the truth:
