Did any of y'all see the most recent PWA slalom event in Tiberias where for the men's fleet it was "rider's choice" on whether they used foils or traditional fins?

https://www.pwaworldtour.com/

A French foiler Nicolas Goyard used his foil for every race, even when it was really windy and all the other riders were on traditional equipment... and he won every race, often by a wide margin.

If it hadn't been for Goyard the fin vs. foil results would have been more mixed because the other foilers weren't quite on his level. But it still looks like foil is going to be the faster machine for slalom moving forward. The biggest advantage seemed to be in the turns where the foil maintained speed while the traditional boards had to slow way down and reaccelerate.

How many foilers are using 430 sq cm front foils?

Goyard spent the last three months trying to break 40 knots on foil, and coming close multiple times.
At the end of each run there was a high speed jibe. Repetition, the thousand hours, you know the story.
The stability is amazing, in the straights and thru the jibes. The cleanest jibes, the tightest jibes, beautiful sailing.
And he was on 6.0, would you rather jibe a 6.0 or a 7.8 at speed? Rotational quickness, and back to planning speed quickly.
Just really impressive sailing and a considerable advance of our sport.
He had the same or better speed in the starts, and if he was behind on first mark he made up 1-3 places in the first jibe. He won 14 straight races 1st place, including all of the first 4 Finals.
When you can outrun AA to first mark that's some straight line speed, then he picks up 30 meters first mark, 40 meters second mark, and on and on each mark gaining significant advantage. But its not just foil advantage.
He won races in the Silvaplana event by minutes and at that event all competitors were on foils.

I'm interested, is it "our" sport, or a different sport with similarities? Does the foil largely remove the "surfing" part of windsurfing?

I do both. I am starting to think that they are two different sports. One on the water, one above the water. One you ride a board and one you ride a foil. Both use a sail for forward motion but you can pump the foil to add more.
The glide on a foil is the main reason he pulls away in the turns. A windsurfer loses speed even in a perfect turn in perfect wind. The foil isn't effected by surface chop or as much by inconsistent winds in the turns and the straights. Your legs don't fatigue as quickly on foil because your not dealing water condition and board chop. Could make a difference in a long race or a weekend of competition.

I find neither easier or harder.
Windsurf powered up, in chop, trying to go fast.
Windfoil, constant small shifts in weight, sheeting, and course angle alterations from changing windspeeds.

I have foiled around 30 days with a 600 sq cm front foil.
Not sure I'd want to use a 430, because falling at slalom board speeds might really hurt.
I like crawling around with the stock 1220, carving windswells and moving at safe speeds.
