Hello!!

I need some tips on adjusting battens (I think). I bought a used Ezzy Tiger 6.0 awhile back and have ridden it some. Lately it seems somewhat twitchy no matter how I set it up and I noticed that when I try to pull the sail flat to max outhaul there are significant pockets of curvature around the batten just above and the batten just below the boom.

The sail material in between those 2 battens is pulled tight though. I've crashed many times and landed on the sail so may be the result of that. But is there any way to tighten the batten back up or is the sail toast? Take a look at the pics and let me know what you think.

I took a pic with medium outhaul today. It gets more pronounced with more outhaul but I was in a hurry to get on the water today! Let me know what you think. Thanks!!

At the end of each batten is a screw to adjust tension. A fall into the sail is not likely to cause a change in the batten tension. Unless the batten is broken. Are you using the correct mast for this sail? Its always best to match your down haul with your out haul. Twitchy usually means the sail is over tensioned. Ezzy's site has excellent rigging videos for all his sails...

I'm using an VERY OLD SDM Powerex mast so it may be worth upgrading at this point. I'm going to rig it today in the garage and see if I can get it right. And buy a new RDM mast! I have all chinook masts for the other Ezzy's in the quiver and they are a breeze to rig. Just can't get this one dialed. Thanks for the tips!

If the mast is too stiff, then the rigging dimensions stated for for the sail won't be right for the sail. I think you can't use as much outhaul because there is more shape in the sail. In Ezzy sails there is a lot of camber built into the sail, by pulling too much on the outhaul you are flattening the sail too much in between the battens but the battens want to maintain the camber.

I once (early '90s?) carried a bunch of new Powerexes from a Hood River shop to an MCS testing setup and "MCS'd" them. They were significantly inconsistent and almost all significantly softer (or was it stiffer?) than advertised.

Then there was their durability problem. If we can see their weave pattern, so can the sun, at least in the boom cutout. It didn't take mine long to start shedding fibers in the cutout, followed by snapping there before I got smart enough to trash 'em at the first sign of deterioration. That epiphany occurred when a new one, on its maiden reach, snapped mid-jibe a kilometer offshore. A bud broke a long string of fresh Powerex Waves in the process of learning how to loop.

I sold all my masts and bought a heap of more reliable masts at the next swap meet. That was at least 15 years ago, I'm still enjoying those same masts, and I'd be very surprised if I ever break one. After all, what other brand has successfully stuffed one of their mast tops up its own bottom in a giant circle?

Pricey? Not when one considers their longevity AND peace of mind.

Photos or better video of the sail please.
Ezzy are super easy to rig! Consistent profiles even through the years.

Yes, if you add more outhaul you generally will need more downhaul as well to balance it out. I have been sailing Ezzy's for years and can't remember ever needing to adjust the screw tensioners on the battens - the factory setting is usually perfect.
I think I have that same Tiger 6.0 and it does have a fuller profile with more of a camber-like "pop" when you flip the sail than on my smaller sizes. Less batten tension can soften that a bit, but more batten tension will likely make it too full and give it the "skinny dog" look (bulging at the battens/ribs).
The battens should be tight enough to remove any wrinkles in the batten pocket on the outside of the sail, but there will still be some small wrinkles in the pocket on the inside of the curvature until you flip the sail to the other tack.

It was the mast!! I sucked it up and bought an Ezzy mast today and happened to get lucky with primo 6.0m breeze to test it out. I seriously can't believe the HUGE difference in stability! It was night and day. No twitches, no constant adjusting, no more riding the bull.

For so long I would ride that sail and chalk it up as "it must have been extra gusty" or to some other random reason why it was so difficult. I knew masts could have an impact but no idea how drastic it could be.

Stoked on the "new" rig!

Glad to hear it. It is always best to use the mast that the sail is designed for.
Like most of us here, I have been doing this a long time. I seen friends get a quiver of new sails and put a used off brand mast in them. Maybe 20 or 30 years ago that might work. Now, sail design is such that you need half as many sails in your quiver if your willing to explore the huge tuning range of modern sails. The proper mast is a big part of that range..
