Hi Gang,

Take a look at the glassy calm waters of the Gorge today. Then look at the Gorge forecast for tomorrow. Sort of hard to believe.

The imagery below shows that a tiny 30-mile wide counterclockwise surface eddy from 2 days ago has morphed into a 400 mile wide huge eddy west of San Francisco that is throwing SW Marine Surge winds into the Bay.

As you can see in the top image this eddy has created epic winds for San Francisco today. But why did the eddy become so large and what does this have to do with the Gorge winds tomorrow?

The surface eddy exploded in size because an upper Cut-Off low at about 18,000 feet formed above the eddy enhancing the eddy's southerly coast winds and fog. In the next image, you can see the upper ridge making it hot today. And south of it the Cut-Off low at about 18,000 feet.

Looking at the animation you can see the counterclockwise eddy winds near San Francisco. Look carefully and you can see how the southerly Marine Surge winds curve into San Francisco creating today's powerful winds.

Now look along the Oregon coast and you can see that the Marine Surge is battling its way up the coast against the NNW winds from the North Pacific High. At this time, it looks like this surge moves towards the Gorge from the coast this night.

As you enjoy tomorrow's epic winds give a toast to San Francisco Eddy!
