I'm curious. Was his tuning advice any different than what is in the manual?

Another time using the XT with some additional experience. They say that you should downhaul as much by hand with the cleat end of the line. However, the 2-pulley system is difficult to do without sitting down and pulling as we all do to get any amount of downhaul, eg sail pulleys within 6 inches of extension pulleys. I had to use my hand tool.

I had a 4.1, winds gusting past 40, and the adjustable downhaul worked great on the water with sail attached.

The ratchet worked fine to de-tension the downhaul, but it stops working by itself after some clicks. At that point you are supposed to be able to release the cleat end, but I found that there is still too much tension on the line, cleat is holding too tight. So you need to provide some tension with your hand to continue release the line with the ratchet, until you can release the line on the cleat end.

In sum, the process is getting smoother, without a sail pulley in which the loop and go system will work (sufficient clearance above the sail pulleys), I doubt it will ever be as fast for me as using a rig winch. Adjusting downhaul on the water is pretty great, though.

Brilliant marketing strategy. No user manual. I wonder why no one ever thought of that before?

It's not a strategy; it's a necessity. He's a one-man shop. Can't do everything, and he's back-ordered for weeks to months at a time because of his decades-long reputation as a master sail designer and fabricator. His website has spaces for several instructive sections yet to be posted. I know several people who are still sailing his 1990's sails because they haven't found anything they like better (he closed his loft in 2000, has just recently returned to designing and making sails). Mine is the first of his newest 2021 generation, and I'm really itching to see what he's learned and applied in that 20-year hiatus and in 2020.

Doug doesn't give those babies away does he! But I understand.
Wondering if yours will be built as pictured (no Dacron).

All the performance upgrades for which I paid extra on my previous quivers come standard on Hurricanes. And don't forget ... all other sails beside Northwaves are made offshore, often (usually?) with price being a significant consideration. Douglas also heavily emphasizes such esoterica as ease of rigging and imperceptible rotation. (However, my hopes for bare-handed tuning were overly optimistic; that last inch needs a simple Clamcleat downhaul tool and one hand.)

I asked Douglas about a dacron leech, but he likes to look less like the masses of sails with colored leech panels. That's OK; mine are plenty colorful.

I'd have already ridden them (maybe justifying a new thread) but for a couple of injuries limiting walking and water exposure. Maybe next week.
