i'm sure there are lots of threads.., but i couldn't find any that really answered my questions...
i am asking about mid-late october on the sound side
i was there only once, probably almost 30 years ago - and it was in october.
i hardly sailed at all the entire week, as there was very little wind
i am guessing that was particularly unlucky.., but looking at the iwindsurf statistics, it seems that hatteras is not dependably windy in october.
it appears that on average one might expect maybe 3 good windsurfing days (15-20kts) and the rest being kind of light-moderate days.
do you guys agree with this assessment?
is the wind in october mostly related to weather systems, rather than sea breezes?
how much does it matter where on the sound you are - is there any spot that's better (for any reason, but mostly for wind) in october, than other spots?
Is a shorty wetsuit typically sufficient? obviously i would bring everything, but i'm trying to get a sense of it. i'd be going with my daughters who windsurf, but do not have full suits. my guess is that if a cold front comes through, a full suit is probably needed. |

I'm heading to Hatteras this weekend. Been going in early October on-off for close to 20 yeas and your assessment is correct. Most wind this time of year is frontal driven so you get predominantly northwest to north-northeast winds with the frontal passage. You also get low pressure systems which can deliver several days of strong northeast winds (which occurred 2 weeks ago). Sea breezes can still happen but not very common the temps drop. Shorty's are fine for most days but you may want a full suit for the early morning northerly wind sessions where air temps can be in the low 60's. I found the Avon area to be best for northwest to north-northeast winds. When it gets more easterly, I head down to Frisco Woods or Isabel's (sound side parking lot at far south end of Frisco on Rt 12) to sail the sound.

Water temp will still be reasonable then, a shorty , or boardies. Unless you are restricted to cargo, take the wetsuit.
October for me has been great.
The wind and temperatures are not a given. _________________ K4 fins

Is it possible to foil at Hatteras or is it too shallow? |

Overall the sound is very shallow at most sailing spots but there are sections that are deep. I'm sure if you stop in one of the shops they'd give you some guidance on where to go. In a NE wind, Frisco Woods campground has chest to overhead water straight out about 100 yds off the beach. |

With a shorter mast (60cm-70cm), there are plenty of places to foil, but wind direction can make a big difference on what launch will work. |

October is usually a good month for Hatteras. The general rule is, however, if you have space, bring everything. The wind is front driven, but we usually get a lot of fronts this time of year as the seasons change; you would be unfortunate not to get three or four sailable days.. It has been cooler than usual over the past couple of weeks. I would normally wear a shorty in October, but wore a full suit once last week; the first time I recall doing so in September. I see board, kite and wing foilers at most soundside locations. You just need local advice on the shallow spots to avoid. Those can change with the wind direction. |

Salvo is shallow. Kiting frendly, SUP, Freestyle or shallow weed fin. I would not foil.
