|

Hi Gang,
The Gorge had one very smoky day recently but California is getting hammered. See the photos below.
San Francisco Bay Area 11:30 AM update by Mike: Looking at over a dozen cams about the Bay Area and at the satellite imagery I am seeing an apocalyptic scene filled with reddish smoke intermingled with marine layer fog. Streetlights are still on at 11 AM and the freeways are clogged with car headlights. If you are an air-breathing mammal you might want to preserve your lungs and take a pass on kiting or windsurfing today. Be aware that if you get into trouble offshore the Coast Guard is unlikely to be able to find you. I am sticking to the current but with NE winds just aloft and the sun obstructed in most of the Central Valley do not expect reliable winds.

One of the most surreal days in SF in the 25 years I've lived here.

Almost all of the cam images were from around 11 AM. The fact that headlights were on in the freeway is telling.
In Russia today it was over 100 degree north of the Arctic Circle. Denver had a heat wave then significant snow.
Interesting...

Still remember Oct 1964, 4pm, 24th and Santiago, JV football practice, orange sky, smoky air, could not see 14th Ave hill, barely could see the trees ONE block away, solo sledding day, Jim Palmer and Steve Steiner on the sled, combined weight of 450 lbs., me pushing it 10 yards to make starter at 100 lbs.
Practice shortened to 1.5 hours only.

Can you comment on this site and its applicability to our micro climate in the gorge? Its forecast section indicates we are going to be in the ashtray for several days....

What do you expect?
Fires burning all around, no breeze to move the smoke.
Nothing new.

Exgolfer, I know you weren't born yesterday.
Fires have been happening since before 1900.
If you happen to be stuck where the smoke accumulates, and there is no wind, you get orange mid days until wind blows it away.
