Interesting data on the difference in infection risk between geographic areas with high and low vaccination rates. Of course the nearly 3.5 million deaths in the world are a little different in terms of the prognosis of the usual right wing suspects here.

Seldom in doubt, rarely correct.

The world's official covid death count is off by a factor of two to three, says the World Health Organization, citing a real total of between 6 and 8 million people. Separately, Texas school reopenings may have triggered hundred of deaths, and Florida has a covid surge in nursing homes.

Reuters: COVID-19 Death Tolls Are Likely A "Significant Undercount", WHO Says
Official tolls showing the number of deaths directly or indirectly attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic are likely to be a "significant undercount", the World Health Organization said on Friday, saying 6-8 million people may have died so far. Presenting its annual World Health Statistics report, the WHO estimated that total deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 were at least 3 million last year or 1.2 million more than officially reported. "We are likely facing a significant undercount of total deaths directly and indirectly attributed to COVID-19," it said. (5/21)

6 to 8 million dead.

Not the only reason I wouldn’t consider moving to Texas:

ABC News: Rapid School Reopenings May Have Led To Thousands Of COVID Cases, Hundreds Of Deaths In Texas
A plan to rapidly reopen schools in Texas may have contributed to thousands of COVID-19 cases and hundreds of deaths, according to an analysis by economists and public policy experts from the University of Kentucky. The analysis, which has not yet been peer reviewed, used a statistical model to estimate that roughly 43,000 people contracted COVID-19 and 800 people possibly died in Texas two months after schools reopened statewide, when virus transmission already was high. The research highlights how in-person learning and its potential "spillover" can affect nearby communities. (Lenthang, 5/20)

From the NYT:

Quote:
Britain has had one of the world’s most successful Covid-19 responses in recent months.

Unlike the European Union, the British government understood that quickly obtaining vaccine doses mattered more than negotiating the lowest price. Unlike the United States, Britain was willing to impose nationwide restrictions again late last year to reduce caseloads. British officials also chose to maximize first vaccine shots and delay second shots, recognizing that the strategy could more quickly reduce Covid cases.

Thanks to these moves, Covid has retreated more quickly in Britain than in almost any other country. Fewer than 10 Britons per day have been dying in recent weeks, down from 1,200 a day in late January. On a per-capita basis, Britain’s death rate last month was less than one-tenth the U.S. rate.

Despite this success, Britain is now coping with a rise in Covid cases. The main cause appears to be the highly infectious virus variant known as Delta, which was first detected in India. Britain’s recent moves to reopen society also probably play a role.

A casualty of Trump's mendacity and the GOP's worship of individuals and denial of community responsibility.

States with higher vaccination rates now have markedly fewer coronavirus cases, as infections are dropping in places where most residents have been immunized and are rising in many places people have not, a Washington Post analysis has found.

States with lower vaccination also have significantly higher hospitalization rates, The Post found. Poorly vaccinated communities have not been reporting catastrophic conditions. Instead, they are usually seeing new infections holding steady or increasing without overwhelming local hospitals.

As recently as 10 days ago, vaccination rates did not predict a difference in coronavirus cases, but immunization rates have diverged, and case counts in the highly vaccinated states are dropping quickly.

And then there is the south--where 8 of the 10 least vaccinated states are.

For California, the number of new infections have dropped from 300,000 per day to 1,000 per day.

This is disturbing. /The UK is seeing another wave of infections. The reason is not clear to me. Our world in data reports their test positivity rate is 2.3%—less than the US at 7.2%. They report 49.6% as vaccinated, with 67.3% having at least one shot. Yet here it is.

Just imagine how many people would be alive in this country if Trump was an honest man with leadership abilities who spoke truth to those who trusted him.

From the NYT--good news and bad news:

Quote:
In many urban and suburban communities, Covid continues to plummet. The rate of new daily cases has fallen below three per 100,000 residents in large cities like Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington. As a point of comparison, the national rate of new daily cases peaked last winter above 75 per 100,000 people.

But in less populated areas — which tend to be more politically conservative and skeptical of vaccines — the virus is now surging, largely from the contagious Delta variant. The states with the worst outbreaks are Arkansas and Missouri (each with more than 16 new daily cases per 100,000 people) followed by Florida (10), Nevada (10), Wyoming (nine) and Utah (eight).

If these outbreaks were concentrated among younger people, it would be less worrisome, because Covid, including the Delta variant, is overwhelmingly mild for children and young adults. Yet even many middle-aged and older adults are not vaccinated in parts of the U.S. They are catching the virus as a result, and some are dying.

While overall rates in the Country are 1/25th of what they were at the peak, red state rates are much higher.

There is additional news which is good. Some portion, perhaps most, of the apparent positive test results for those who have been vaccinated seem to be false positives. Apparently the PCR test interprets the antibody response in those who have been vaccinated as an infection. More will be revealed.

All in on trusting Trump, not science:

By Elizabeth Cohen and John Bonifield | CNN
A new data analysis identifies clusters of unvaccinated people, most of them in the southern United States, that are vulnerable to surges in Covid-19 cases and could become breeding grounds for even more deadly Covid-19 variants.

The analysis by researchers at Georgetown University identified 30 clusters of counties with low vaccination rates and significant population sizes. The five most significant of those clusters are sprawled across large swaths of the southeastern United States and a smaller portion in the Midwest.

The five clusters are largely in parts of eight states, starting in the east in Georgia and stretching west to Texas and north to southern Missouri. The clusters also include parts of Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Tennessee, and are made up of mostly smaller counties but also cities such as Montgomery, Alabama; Shreveport, Louisiana; and Amarillo, Texas.

Most of these states are currently seeing increases in Covid-19 cases.

From National Geographic. The rise of ignorance may doom us all.

Quote:
A smaller but still alarming number of people—26 percent—say they are skipping the COVID-19 shot because they don’t trust vaccines in general. That’s especially troubling when one of the brightest spots of the pandemic has been the rise in mRNA technology. The two mRNA vaccines currently in use continue to prove safe and effective, and that’s driving development of mRNA shots for a host of other diseases. Moderna has already started human clinical trials for an mRNA flu vaccine. And as Stacey Colino reports for us, promising clinical trials are underway for mRNA vaccines that can help beat back especially dire forms of cancer, including pancreatic cancer and melanoma (pictured above).
