Arrived at 11:30 am
No problem getting in.
It was nuking and I thought I was in for a beating.
Rigged a 4.2 hit the water a little after 12 pm
And it was surprisingly good and manageable for a couple of hours.
I thought it was the 90's as the afternoon progressed as
more than a dozen cars showed up on the North side.
Three people sailing out of the South side.
Got Gusty later in the afternoon and a lot of people where bailing
on it. We figured out one guy was missing called it in the
Rangers found him on the south side with equipment problems.
Also did not use a weed fin an no spin outs though the water
was low so you had to try not to get close to the sides.

This has been my favorite spot for 20 years or more
since 1993.
I have had that link for a very long time above 219
is minimum for no fin scraping and you have to walk out
about 50 to 100 feet on the North side before you can
launch, and be careful at that . Yesterady there was about
2 to 4 feet of beach on the North side when there is
none it's about 220 up .220 is not that high but
it vary sailable. between 222 and 224 is high . I have sailed
there at 217 where the shoal's are islands and you have
to stay in the channel along the power lines.
If you are always in the channel you won't have a problem
near the highway on the mederos side is quite different.
Your sense of full or safe is very different than mine.
I was fin scraping on the Mederos side along the tree line
there is a definite high spot there. There is also a shoal on
mediros side where they have the hazard buoy that can get
you when it's low.
Sorry if this sounds like a rant.

It went ballistic around 5pm blew us all off the water. 2 guys kept sailing with vintage speed gear and 3.something sails.

When sailing from the north end of the reservoir how deep is the water on a good day and what is the wind direction in relation to the shore? I understand there can be a few shallow spots on certain days but presumably it's quite deep once you get out into the sailing area? Although since weeds are an issue maybe it isn't overhead? it has been 10 or more years since I sailed there so I don't really remember. I'm looking for a good place to take our two preteens that are just practicing their waterstarts. my recollection is it doesn't quite get windy enough most days at shoreline in Palo Alto and the side offshore wind at our usual spot, candlestick also makes that a little tricky. Actually I suppose we should go to Berkeley given the great wind direction there. But curious what the setup is at the reservoir.

First of all to be clear it's O Neil Forebay where all the sailing
is done. Good directions are NW to SW with mostly slightly SW
being the normal direction . If you enter through the North Gate
it's about 2 miles down to the shore . For the South Gate you have
to go to Santa Nella and turn left , turn left again for the entrance and go down about 4 to 5 miles of dirt road to get to the South sailing area.
This adds about 10 miles to your trip in each direction if you
are coming from the bay area on 152.
Nicer facility's and camping on the South Side though .
Cement out house picnic tables with roof's
No ski area ='s normal sailing area
Yellow =launch spots
Green = Shallow to knee deep at 220
Orange = First Shoal from North Side generaly Waist to
Head Deep and the wind line transition to high wind is
sometime at this point.
Red = Can be dangerously low broke a boom and hurt myself here
fin scraping a lot
Blue = the Channel (not shown in the map are the two island's
with power towers.) The channel is deep if the water
level is low or there are lot weed its the place to sail.
Also has bigger ramps between the North side and first Island
Not shown there is a bit of shoal next to the buoy on the south
side that runs about east to west that can get you on really low
days usually not a problem.
Also dirt road down to Launch from North side not shown it's the
first right past the Entrance ranger station.
Always carry a weed fin just in case you need it.
The last few years they have been controlling the weeds pretty
good. Either by cutting or copper sulfate.
Make sure your sails and boards are dry for the Quaga/Zebra mussel check.
I think the North side might be a little more friendly for training
but both sides are great this is the big easy.
10 dollar day use fee.
Year long poppy pass day use 125 last time I bought one.
