The other day I got up at 6am and the sky was perfectly clear. As sunrise approached a haze formed overhead. The sun came up at about 7 and the haze overhead thickened and then gradually burned off.

Many years ago I lived high on a hill overlooking the South Bay. On mornings when the sun rose over a thick surface fog, you could see in the space of a few minutes the fog exploding upward.

My question for you weather nerds is, the sun adds heat -- why is *more* fog forming when the sun rises and adds heat to the atmosphere?

Is the fog forming or is the heat warming and causing rising air to be displaced by low lying fog?

Driving up the freeway I didn't see any adjacent fog and I was 5 miles from the Bay.

It was a cool morning. This must be some kind of radiation fog plus inversion layer thing but I can't make it out.

The other thing I've been seeing is totally clear sky down to the horizon 30 mins before sunrise on the East Bay hills, then as the sun comes up you see fog forming on the ridgetops.

Been watching these various fog things for 50 years and realized I don't really understand all of them.
