Winds are 4.0 to 4.5 right now.
Weeds are below surface with big clumps on the surface |

I am planning to try O'neill forebay today.
Where do windsurfs launch ?
How do you check the water level ?
What is the weed situation right now ?
Are Thrusters ok for weed?
Thanks |
The water level is at http://cdec.water.ca.gov/dynamicapp/QueryF?s=ONF
It's pretty high- over 222 today. You can launch at the San Luis Creek side (west side of the lake)- it's the first right turn down a dirt road after you enter. Or, you can launch on the Medeiros (east) side, which is a long drive down some dirt roads to the launch from the other entrance. Google maps can get you to both entrances. The weeds are usually pretty filled in by mid August. So, expect them to be right below the surface with the water at 222. A tri fin would probably catch a bunch of them and start to be pretty annoying. You'll do better avoiding the weeds launching from the Medeiros side. Or, a board with a pretty swept back single wave fin will probably work on the SL Creek side with the water pretty filled up. I usually sail San Luis a couple of times a month when I get tired of fog and no wind on the coast; so, I have two older boards that I keep just because they fit my weed fins.
I'm also probably heading out there today if they wind holds up, and have a few old US box weed fins that I could loan you if you have a pretty long fin box |
Thanks PJS, it's very nice of you.
I have a Severne dyno with a powerbox...so we shall see how bad the weed are.
I will try launching from Meideros then.
See you on the water, I will be there from 3 to 6 |

I didn't see any green van. Were you by the powerlines ? I was further east.
Weed was not bad at all where I was. I don't have any weed fin and only had to de-weed my thrusters once. Was overpowered in 4.2 most of the time but had fun. I will be there later today towards 3PM. Maybe I should try the spot at the powerlines, I think it's more flat and probably better for speed. Hit 28knts in the chop, so I hope to do more than 30 on flatter water |

Boating area sailing is what you are doing.
Which is OK on super windy days. The power line
islands decrease the wind there.(when the direction is West)
Also sail-able on a East Wind though rare.
It also use to be good trick when weeds are a big problem
and you have heavy wind.
I would advise you to a least buy a middle weed fin if
not a set.
Weed Waves are good enough and also useful if you go to to other
weedy places like natural brides or Tamales.
You have to go all the way up to the end of the dirt road, take all the left forks in the road once you get past the first right past the camping area
(if you go through it.)with the only paved road.(Past the power lines you will come over a rise
and all will become apparent.)
(almost the end you will see a nice stone bathroom and picnic tables barbecue pits
and then a line of tree's . Parking where the line of trees starts
tends to be the optimum place to park. (Shade , seats and a nice
bathroom, grassy rigging area)
to get to the Southside. (Mediros) sailing launch that everybody
normally uses.
The channel along the power lines from the south side launch tends
to stay weed free longer.(West of Lines)
The North launch subtracts about 10 miles of your trip in each
direction if you are coming from San Jose , Santa Cruz.
Also its maybe less than one mile on a dirt road rather than
4 or 5 .
The South side can be a better choice if you like the Rollers along the
the channel .
It there are significant weeds in the middle.
If you want to camp because you can't on the North Side.
(Next to the normal launch)
If its a holiday and the North Entrance is packed.

There is a blue green alage problem up there
which is toxic. Ask about it.
I don't know what the exact policy's are on that currently.
I would suggest you call the Reservoir numbers to find out.
They used to require safety equipment to launch there.
San Luis
1-209-826-9019
San Luis North gate
1-209-826-4714
Report back but I think it's the same as last year. |
