Right-wing conspiracy theorist Jones to pay $100,000 in court and legal fees in Sandy Hook case
Quote: | Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones of InfoWars notoriety has been ordered by Texas Judge Scott Jenkins to pay $100,000 in court costs and legal fees as part of a defamation lawsuit. The suit charges that Jones’ peddling of a conspiracy theory that the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre was a hoax created by the federal government defames the parents of the murdered children by calling them “crisis actors.” Not only is this claim morally repugnant, but the parents say it’s led to real-life threats and harassment.
On Dec. 14, 2012, a gunman shot and killed 20 children and six adults at the school in Newtown, Connecticut. Jones previously told the viewers of his show that the shooting was a hoax, though he has since said in a sworn deposition that he now believes the shooting was real. He says that a “form of psychosis” made him question whether the mass shooting was real.
Neil Heslin, the father of one of the children killed in Newtown, brought the defamation case against Jones and his website. Heslin says that he’s received numerous death threats from people who bought into Jones’ conspiracy theory. He sued Jones in April 2018, as did other families. |

Who's Alex Jones? Even after Googling the name, I don't recognize him or his schtick. |

Relationship with Donald Trump
In December 2015, Jones says he initially "formed a bond" with Donald Trump, after the presidential candidate appeared on The Alex Jones Show, with Trump stating "Your reputation is amazing. I will not let you down."[88]
During the 2016 presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton criticized Trump for his ties to Jones.[133][134] Jones said that Trump called him on the day after the election to thank him for his help in the campaign.[135] Since Trump took office, it has been claimed Jones communicates with the President through aides, something which Chief of Staff John Kelly had reportedly tried to block.[136][137]
Quote: | Litigation
In February 2017, the lawyers of James Alefantis, owner of Comet Ping Pong pizzeria, sent Jones a letter demanding an apology and retraction for his role in pushing the Pizzagate conspiracy theory. Under Texas law, Jones was given a month to comply or be subject to a libel suit.[140] In March 2017, Jones apologized to Alefantis for promulgating the conspiracy theory and retracted his allegations.[141]
In April 2017, the Chobani yogurt company filed a lawsuit against Jones for his article that claims that the company's factory in Idaho, which employs refugees, was connected to a 2016 child sexual assault and a rise in tuberculosis cases.[142] As a result of the lawsuit, Jones issued an apology and retraction of his allegations in May 2017.[143]
In March 2018, Brennan Gilmore, who shared a video he captured of a car hitting anti-racism protesters at the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, filed a lawsuit[144] against Jones and six others. According to the lawsuit, Jones said that Gilmore was acting as part of a false flag operation conducted by disgruntled government "deep state" employees in promotion of a coup against President Trump.[145] Gilmore alleges he has been receiving death threats from Jones' audience.[145]
Leonard Pozner, father of a Sandy Hook shooting victim who has been forced to move several times to avoid harassment and death threats accusing him of being a crisis actor, has filed a defamation suit against Jones in Texas.[146] Jones was found to be in contempt of court even before the trial started, failing produce witnesses and materials relevant to the procedures. Consequently, Jones and Infowars were fined a total of $126,000 in October and December 2019.[147]
Khan Shaykhun chemical attack
In April 2017, Jones was criticized for claiming that the Khan Shaykhun chemical attack was a hoax and a "false flag".[148][149] Jones stated that the attack was potentially carried out by civil defense group White Helmets, which he falsely claims are an Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist front financed by George Soros.[150][151]
Social media restrictions
On July 24, 2018,[152] YouTube removed four of InfoWars' videos citing "long-standing policies against child endangerment and hate speech",[153][154] and issued a "strike" against the InfoWars channel.[152] YouTube also suspended the channel's ability to live stream.[154] On July 27, 2018, Facebook suspended Jones's profile for 30 days, and also removed the same videos, saying they violated Facebook's standards against hate speech and bullying.[155][152] On August 3, 2018, Stitcher Radio removed all of his podcasts stating that he was involved in harassment or encouraged it.[156]
On August 6, 2018, Facebook, Apple, YouTube and Spotify removed all content by Alex Jones and InfoWars from their platforms for violating their policies. |

Alex Jones Doesn't Care About You
Quote: | Josh Owens was an InfoWars employee from 2013 to 2017. In an essay published on CNN.com this week, Owens described his deep regret over the past 5 years as he grappled with the damage his work caused. OTM reporter Micah Loewinger spoke to Owens this week about Jones' role in the dissemination of disinformation in the light of what we are learning about the January 6th insurrection. |

FROM FRINGE TO FRONTLINE
How Alex Jones stoked many of the conspiracy theories taking hold in today’s Republican party
Quote: | On a January night in 2002, a 37-year-old man donned a patriotic-themed uniform, covered his face with a skull mask and activated a long-held plan.
Armed with a .45-caliber pistol, crossbow, makeshift bomb launcher, 2-foot-long sword and double-barreled shotgun/assault rifle hybrid, Richard McCaslin made his way into a forest north of San Francisco. His mission: to find and expose a secretive group of elites who — he wrongly believed — engaged in child abuse and human sacrifice.
On a January afternoon nearly 20 years later, another man made his way from California to Washington, DC, on a quest to vanquish elites who, he wrongly believed, had stolen the presidential election from Donald Trump. Daniel Rodriguez, then 38, joined the mob that besieged the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. During the battle to breach the building, Rodriguez used a stun gun on a police officer, who would suffer a heart attack and traumatic brain injury.
Both McCaslin and Rodriguez said they had been inspired by a fiery conspiracy theory peddler named Alex Jones.
McCaslin — who watched Jones sneak onto the site in a 2000 film called “Dark Secrets Inside Bohemian Grove,” and who was thwarted by sheriff’s deputies before he could inflict harm on staff at the Bohemian Grove campground — was a freakish outlier. Rodriguez — who said Jones’ website had inspired him to seek “truth and answers” — held false beliefs about the 2020 election now shared by millions of Americans.
It’s a contrast that mirrors the startling transformation of Jones, whose influence — through his technological prowess, fortuitous timing, cult of personality and sheer force of will — has crept from the fringes to the mainstream.
A self-made entrepreneur, Jones is the creator and host of Infowars, a far-right conspiracy-mongering website that features articles and daily videos of his commentary.
With the verbal fluidity of a great talk show host and the excitable charisma of a televangelist, the hard-charging, gravelly voiced Jones has perfected the WWE-ification of the news: It looks professional, but is far from real.
If the object of an actual news show is to inform viewers in a compelling way, the object of Infowars is to whip up the ever-dormant flames of populist fear and resentment in service of going viral — without a thought to who gets hurt or who is driven to violence. It’s doom-porn, and the name of the game is to get eyeballs and sell products.
Sitting at his anchor desk, surrounded by news clippings in his remarkably professional studio in Austin, Texas, the 48-year-old Jones puts on an hours-long online show six days a week that revels in the coming apocalypse and rails against a shadowy, evil enemy. |
