Peter Thiel, Mercer Family Back Potential J.D. Vance Senate Run

Quote:

(Bloomberg) -- Tech billionaire Peter Thiel donated $10 million to a super PAC supporting venture capitalist J.D. Vance’s possible run for retiring U.S. Senator Rob Portman’s Ohio seat.

Thiel gave $10 million to Protect Ohio Values, a super PAC created last month to back Vance’s potential bid for the seat’s Republican primary, according to Bryan Lanza, an adviser to the PAC.

The family of hedge fund manager Robert Mercer also donated an undisclosed amount, but Lanza declined to specify how much.

The PAC was formed in part by Timothy Koch of Koch & Hoos, Federal Election Commission records show.

seems amazon is supporting right wingers that do not want all americans to vote. again some of these right wingers actually all of them seem to approve of Georgias law that you can not give food or even a drink of water to a voter in line to vote even if the line (normally in minority districts) has a 12 hour wait.

such barbaric intent.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/amazon-says-it-supports-expanding-voting-rights-but-it-gave-500-000-to-lawmakers-who-oppose-those-efforts/ar-BB1fgYpq?ocid=uxbndlbingoff

Amazon says it supports expanding voting rights but it gave $500,000 to lawmakers who oppose those efforts

Amazon said in a statement Tuesday that it supports efforts to "protect and expand" voting rights.
But the company spent more than $500,000 last election cycle funding politicians who oppose those efforts.
It also gave money to the Texas GOP, which has been passing restrictive voting laws for years.
See more stories on Insider's business page.
Earlier this week, voting rights activists called for boycotts of Coca-Cola, Delta Airlines, and Home Depot, blasting the Georgia-based companies for not doing enough to oppose a controversial new state law that they condemned as voter suppression.

While all three issued generic statements in support of voting rights, critics accused the multibillion-dollar corporations, which have massive influence in national- and state-level politics, of failing to back up those words with actions - or their pocketbooks.

As Republican-led legislatures advance similar bills in Texas and other states, some companies have tried to get ahead of the backlash by issuing statements condemning efforts to restrict voting rights.

But many have a poor track record when it comes to supporting the lawmakers behind those efforts.

More than 70 Black business leaders, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Microsoft, Apple CEO Tim Cook, and JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon all came out with statements opposing bills like the one Georgia passed, as did Amazon.

"It has been fifty-six years since the Voting Rights Act became law, yet efforts to disenfranchise Black people and other minorities continue to this day. The ability to vote is one of the most prized fundamental rights in our American democracy, and Amazon supports policies that protect and expand those rights," Amazon PR and public policy chief Jay Carney said in a statement on Twitter.

Carney, who previously worked as President Barack Obama's press secretary, praised efforts to expand voting rights in Virginia, where Amazon has a major presence and therefore plenty of reasons to stay in the good graces of its Democratic governor and state legislature.

"We oppose efforts in other states aimed at restricting the ability of Americans to vote," Carney added.

But that's not quite accurate, at least in terms of which politicians Amazon has supported. (Amazon did not respond to multiple requests for comment on this story).

Amazon spent $18.7 million on lobbying last year, an increase of 30% since 2018, making it the biggest spender in the US other than Facebook. Those expenditures help Amazon convince current members of Congress to pass laws that will benefit its business, like tax cuts and subsidies or bigger budgets for the government agencies it contracts with.

The company also gives money to congressional members and candidates to try to keep friendlier lawmakers in power or force unfriendly ones out. Amazon does that through its corporate Political Action Committee, which spent $1.9 million during the 2019-2020 election cycle alone, according to Insider's analysis of Federal Election Commission data via Open Secrets.

Of the $1.3 million that Amazon's PAC gave to individuals, $471,000 went to lawmakers who voted against the For the People Act, which would expand access to the ballot box, voter registration opportunities, and mail-in and early voting, as well as creating increased transparency in the US' campaign finance system.

And many of those lawmakers have a long history of opposing efforts to expand voting rights, both at the federal and state level.

Of the 186 Republican House members who voted in 2019 against restoring key parts of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which would have made it harder for states like Georgia to pass voter suppression laws, Amazon supported 143 members, giving them a total of $510,000.

Just last May, California Rep. Darrell Issa sued the state for sending mail-in ballots to residents so they could vote safely during the pandemic. Amazon gave Issa $5,000 last election cycle.

According to data from the Texas Ethics Commission, Amazon also gave $15,000 last year to Republican lawmakers in the state, despite years of the party passing notoriously restrictive and discriminatory voter ID laws.

Voting rights have been a hyperpartisan issue for years, with Republicans arguing that restrictive voting rules are needed to prevent widespread fraud. But independent experts within and outside of the US have proved dozens of times that fraud is extremely rare and has never affected the outcome of an election and that bills restricting voting rights disproportionately impact people of color.

Yet Amazon has continued to support GOP lawmakers who even opposed Congress' last successful bipartisan voting rights law in 2002, the Help America Vote Act. Amazon gave a combined $53,500 to 12 of the members who fought that effort and are still in Congress over the past two years.

Following the attempted insurrection on January 6, civil rights activists and consumers pressured companies to stop financially supporting the 147 GOP lawmakers who voted against certifying states' Electoral College results.

Dozens did, including Amazon, which had given $253,500 to 76 of those members, though it only promised to "suspend" those contributions, leaving the door open for the company to potentially resume its support closer to the 2022 congressional races.

where is the press to taught another ultra partisan right winger giving more to the ultra right than Sorros does...

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/meet-the-billionaire-bankrolling-noem-s-border-deployment/ar-AALBaOI

Meet the Billionaire Bankrolling Noem’s Border Deployment

Quote:

A Tennessee GOP megadonor who made his billions reselling banged-up autos will bankroll South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem’s latest foray onto the national stage—paying an undisclosed sum through his private foundation to send more than four dozen members of the Mt. Rushmore State’s National Guard to the nation’s southern border.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, Willis Johnson confirmed that his eponymous endowment will donate an undisclosed amount to South Dakota’s Emergency and Disaster Fund to underwrite the deployment of up to 50 National Guard personnel to Texas for as long as two months. Johnson said he reached out with his offer after Noem announced she would answer Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s request for interstate assistance to repel unauthorized border crossing from Mexico.

“I seen what Governor Abbott was doing down there in Texas,” Johnson said, noting that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis had recently announced plans to send police officers to help his fellow Republican. “I thought, you got two big states in it, now you got a smaller state doing it, I thought I might as well help out. So I gave her a call.”

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, another member of the GOP, is also shipping cops to Abbott’s aid. But Johnson said he would not be funding any other governors’ border adventures, maintaining that he only reached out to Noem because he believed South Dakota had fewer resources. He added that he had hoped to contribute the money anonymously, but Noem’s office had told him that would be unlawful.

Valued by Forbes at $2.2 billion, Johnson founded the damaged auto auction company Copart in 1982 after a decade running a junkyard in Vallejo, California. The salvage firm is now traded on the Nasdaq, and Johnson has retired to a sprawling estate he purchased from country music star Alan Jackson. The used car magnate has become an increasingly high-dollar GOP donor, splashing out more than $350,000 toward former President Donald Trump’s re-election effort and nearly $180,000 to the Republican National Committee in the past two years.

But charities like Willis and Reba Johnson’s Fund—named for the businessman’s wife—aren’t supposed to participate in politics, at least not directly, according to Internal Revenue Service rules. The fund, which held more than $28 million in Copart stock as of its most recent disclosure, has largely financed religious organizations in the past. However, it has also donated to at least one National Rifle Association-sponsored event and to the Alpha Pregnancy Center, which counsels women against receiving abortions.

Despite acknowledging his history of political giving, Johnson insisted his assistance to Noem is a purely patriotic and public-spirited endeavor.

“It’s helping America is what it is,” he said, before quickly slipping back into politics. “I think that people can come to America, I love America, but it’s gotta be under the law, not under some president who can just say ‘we’re opening the borders up.’”

President Joe Biden has made no such declaration, and his administration issued repeated statements discouraging would-be migrants from entering the United States. His agencies have also rained money on controversial contractors to detain and transport children who have crossed the border unaccompanied.

Johnson told The Daily Beast he plans to support Trump for a second term in 2024, should the twice-impeached ex-president run—though he said Noem is tied with DeSantis for his second choice.

"If he decides not to run, it would be one of these other two,” he said.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/berkshire-backed-pilot-seeks-3-164604204.html

(Bloomberg) -- The Haslam family, one of the richest in the U.S., is taking advantage of the booming leveraged loan market to help cash out of its holdings of Pilot Travel Centers LLC, owner of the Pilot Flying J truck stop chain.

Pilot Travel Centers is borrowing $3.5 billion to buy back $2.3 billion of preferred equity held by the Haslam and the Call families, and to refinance debt. The families started selling the business to Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. in 2017, with the conglomerate planning to increase its stake to 80% through 2023.

The Knoxville, Tennessee-based Haslams are among the U.S.’s richest families with a net worth of more than $12 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Their fortune can be traced back to 1958, when James Haslam II paid $6,000 to take over a Virginia gas station. In 2009, Pilot acquired Flying J, founded by Jay Call.

Haslam’s son, Jimmy, 67, was CEO of the business until January, and also owns the Cleveland Browns football team. The family will retain 20% of the business after 2023.

Representatives for Wells Fargo & Co., which is leading the loan sale, and for Pilot declined to comment. Berkshire Hathaway didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

A lender call for the $3.5 billion loan is scheduled for Monday at 1 p.m. New York time, with commitments due July 29. The debt being refinanced includes a revolving credit facility and a portion of a different term loan, both maturing in 2024.

this is from wikipedia...

Quote:
Haslam has long been involved in politics in Knoxville, Tennessee, where Pilot is headquartered, both in an active role, and as a Republican Party fundraiser. He was a fundraiser for both Senator Howard Baker in the 1960s and President Gerald Ford in the 1970s.[10] He was also appointed chairman of the Knox County Public Building Authority in the early 1970s.[11] As chairman of this group, Haslam, a long-time proponent of metropolitan government,[11] spearheaded the initiative to build the Knoxville City-County Building.[12] In 1999, Knox County declined to reappoint Haslam to the Public Building Authority, which some interpreted as revenge for his support of a failed metropolitan government initiative the previous year.[11]

In 2002, Haslam's son, Bill, ran for mayor of Knoxville, bringing greater public scrutiny to the Haslam family. His opponent in the race, Madeline Rogero, consistently tried to portray Bill Haslam as a puppet of his father and the region's oil interests, which Bill Haslam staunchly denied.[10] She also blamed Jim Haslam for UT's hiring of controversial president, John Shumaker, in 2002.[10] During Bill Haslam's 2010 gubernatorial campaign, his opponents consistently brought up price-gouging allegations levied against Pilot in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.[8]

In 2006, Chattanooga mayor Bob Corker, a former college roommate of Jimmy Haslam and long-time family friend, was elected to the United States Senate. Jimmy Haslam was the financial manager for his campaign.[10]

Jim Haslam was the Tennessee state co-chairman for the 2012 presidential campaign of Republican candidate Mitt Romney.[13]

GOP megadonor pours $1M into primary against Arkansas Senator Boozman

Quote:
One of the Republican Party’s biggest donors is working to defeat Arkansas Sen. John Boozman in next year’s GOP primary.

Dick Uihlein, a prominent conservative megadonor, is giving $1 million to a newly formed super PAC aligned with Republican Jake Bequette, according to a person familiar with the contribution. Bequette is an Iraq war veteran and retired NFL player who is challenging Boozman.

Uihlein, an Illinois shipping and supply company executive, has a long history of giving to anti-establishment causes. Earlier this year, he cut a $2.5 million check to a super PAC bolstering Missouri Senate hopeful Eric Greitens, a former governor who stepped down from office after he was accused of sexually assaulting his hairdresser. Senior Republicans have expressed concern that should Greitens win the primary, he would jeopardize the party’s prospects of retaining the seat in 2022. In recent years, Uihlein has also backed GOP primary challengers running against the then-governor of Illinois and another Republican senator.

The pro-Bequette super PAC, Arkansas Patriots Fund, recently filed papers with the Federal Election Commission announcing its formation.

But Bequette, who played college football at the University of Arkansas before being drafted by the New England Patriots in 2012, faces an uphill battle against Boozman, who spent a decade in the House before being elected to the Senate in 2010. While Bequette is running as a staunch Trump supporter, the former president has endorsed Boozman.

Uihlein and his wife, Elizabeth, are among the biggest donors of the 2022 midterms so far. The couple has given millions of dollars to the anti-tax Club for Growth and provided six-figure donations to the GOP’s House and Senate campaign arms and the Republican National Committee.

Publix grocery store heiress donated $150,000 to GOP attorneys general group to promote the January 6 protest

Quote:

Publix was founded in 1930 by George Jenkins. The supermarket now operates nearly 1,300 grocery store locations throughout the Southeastern US and is one of the largest regional grocery store chains in the country. The Jenkins family has a net worth of over $8.8 billion dollars, according to Forbes' 2020 list of America's richest families. Although Fancelli is not involved in Publix's operations, she is the president of the nonprofit foundation named after her father, according to a 2019 tax filing obtained by ProPublica

....

Fancelli, a top donor to former President Donald Trump, gave about $300,000 to Women for America First, the "Stop the Steal" group that obtained a permit for the rally, making her the prime contributor for the event, according to records viewed by The Post. Fancelli donated more than 50% of the funds needed for the rally, which was organized to push false claims that voter fraud led to Trump's loss in the election.

https://news.yahoo.com/democratic-sen-kyrsten-sinema-received-171108061.html

Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema received the legal maximum of donations from several known GOP donors, new FEC filings show

Quote:
Among those who made the maximum donation was Minnesota billionaire Stan Hubbard, who regularly donates to the RNC and supported Scott Walker and eventually Trump's campaign for president through donations to a super PAC, Mother Jones reported.

Jimmy Haslam, the owner of the Cleveland Brown's and Pilot truck stops, and his wife, Susan, individually donated the maximum legal amount to Sinema on September 30, Mother Jones reported, citing the FEC data. According to the report, Haslam has given at least $425,000 to the Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC associated with Sen. Mitch McConnell that works to elect Republicans in the Senate.

Other GOP donors who backed Sinema include Marc Rowan, the CEO of the private equity firm Apollo who backed Trump's failed bid for reelection, and his wife, Carolyn, who individually donated the maximum legal limit. Private equity executive Anthony De Nicola, who also has backed the Senate Leadership Fund, also donated the maximum legal limit to Sinema, according to Mother Jones.
