I doubt a majority of windsurfers would want to use a foil. I certainly wouldn't.
The prime fascination of windsurfing (to me) is to skim/plane at speed across the surface of the sea and in close contact with it, be it glorious swell or even good old up and down big chop.
I'm not in line for a divorce from that addiction! |

oh well ... |
But think of it this way:
As a recreational sailor rather than buying a formula board and +11m sail all you need is to strap a foil onto any board that you can uphaul and continue using your normal sails. You could even buy something cheap and durable like an old GO since it's only going to touch the water occasionally.
The 4-bolt foils are starting to show up under $1000 and this plate will let you access the ones used for SUP and kiting as well.
I do agree that it needs some breakaway protection though. |

Considering the forces involved, the fin box on that inexpensive, old board might just be the breakaway protection. This could be a good way to try foiling without completely breaking the bank. You can always do that later, if you get hooked. |

There are so many old board at minimal value available. I think we can risk a few fin boxes.
Speaking of foils. I love how starboard have pixelated their "secret" foil in this video

Here is a thought. I'm pushing 70 with all in pains that go along with the action life style. Mostly back and knees. The smooth ride of a foil looks interesting. But not for lite winds. Lets say the water is super choppy 4.0
I use to love that but now find it painful. How would a foil work in high winds to smooth out the ride. or are they only lite wind toys???????? |

At end of video: is it cut-off race board? Looks like they cut board by middle of original finbox and didn't even bother to seal it. _________________ Andrew

novaan, foiling requires much less sail for any given wind.
i like to use a 9.0 sail. it keeps me in shape for long, hard surf sailing days. on dayz when i am pumping a 9.0 in pretty light winds, some guys are foiling with 6.0's.
friend of mine is developing foils. he says the sea state limits him whe it is windy when foiling.
i am with gurgle, i want to ffeel the texture of the water.
i also want the workout.
foiling does offer a workout in that it is another set of controlling trims to learn.... _________________ www.aerotechsails.com

it IS a valid question - is windsurf foiling ONLY for light winds ?
on Auzzie forum a fellow was discussing speed foiling
saw somewhere that smaller foils/blades can be used in higher winds
may not need to change the foil "mast" ??
saw kites foiling with 5 m² in 25-30 mph
since i often divide their size by 2 to get windsurf sail approximation,
windsurf foiliers should be out in 2.5 m² sails ??
time will tell if this "new" idea will pan out or just be trendy
AHD has been offering the full kit for quite some time now
locally there are about 4 kite foilers and no windsurf foilers
that is a very LOW representation in terms of ratios ...
too new or ?? |

Agreed. Plus, I think that plate might transfer some of the torque from the fin box to the hull.
I found this video to be interesting, even with the obvious brand-boosting. http://blogg.surfers.se/vindsurfing/foil-windsurfing-qa-sebastian-kornum-surfers/ |

Interesting question (the last one) in that it's not a "new" idea, windsurf foiling actually started back in the late 80's then faded out, now it's back again.
The foils have improved a bit, more choices, more manufacturers, but not really that many more windsurfers.
I think watching kiters foiling, has brought foiling interest back to the windsurfers, who were there long before. Only time will tell.
Many kiters were looking for a new challenge, and a new dimension, whereas windsurfing is full of dimensions and definitely more challenges, much harder than kiting. That's my somewhat non-pc reason why it was the kiters who brought the interest back. |
