It is rare to find a world leader (politician) who is heroic. Trump and Johnson arrived at the right time. Nigel Farage may have to finish the job. |
I agree with both of you guys, but making the sausage is a lot harder than most think. The people voted to leave the EU, but getting from point A to point B is a lot harder than originally thought. |

The vote was very close52% to 48%, with huge margins against Brexit in Scotland and a smaller margin against leaving in Northern Ireland. https://www.bbc.com/news/politics/eu_referendum/results
Like many thingstake abortion in this country-a noisy minority can make it difficult for the majority. And under a written Constitution and Bill of Rights, there is a commitment to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority.
The reason for my current posting is a bit of schadenfreude over the troubles of Boris the buffoon. But of course there could be a serious discussion about the benefits and drawbacks of a parliamentary system. I wont hold my breath waiting for any serious comments. |

russian involvement may have been able to slant to that side. Note russia is not afraid to go right into the UK and try to kill people. Rember Russians were able to make groups of right wingers to go to gtherings and protests and not one russian was there in the USA. Though again trump has welcomed those attacks and asked for Russia to attack americans. _________________ when good people stay silent the right wing are the only ones heard. |

The triumph of ideology (faith and xenophobia?) over critical thinking.
Quote: | The UK government promised that Brexit would liberate Britain from European trading regulations and herald a bright new era for Britain on the world stage.
Yet after spending years campaigning for the UK's exit from the European Union, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his colleagues have been oddly quiet about Britain's fortunes ever since it left.
The reason for their silence is becoming increasingly obvious. Since Britain left European trade and customs rules at the start of this year, there has been a dramatic decline in UK trade.
According to the UK's Office for National Statistics, trade between the EU and the UK was hit hard in January, with exports down by 40.7% compared with December and imports from the EU down by 28% in the same period. |

Those pesky facts.
Quote: | By JILL LAWLESS - Associated Press
LONDON (AP) â Britainâs departure from the European Union has brought higher costs, more red tape and border delays for businesses, and not yet delivered promised benefits, a public spending watchdog said Wednesday.
A day after Prime Minister Boris Johnson appointed a âBrexit opportunitiesâ minister, Parliamentâs Public Accounts Committee said that the âonly detectable impactâ of Brexit so far has been to increase burdens on businesses.
Britain left the European Unionâs vast single market for goods and services on Dec. 31, 2020. Most trade remains tariff-free, but Brexit has brought a host of new customs checks and other barriers to previously frictionless trade.
Supporters of Brexit argue that leaving the bloc, which Britain joined in 1973, will allow the U.K. to slash red tape, increase productivity and streamline the economy.
âYet the only detectable impact so far is increased costs, paperwork and border delays,â said Meg Hillier, the Labour Party lawmaker who heads the committee, which has members from both government and opposition parties. |

What a surprise. Xenophobia is expensive and inconvenient.

Quote: | Since Brexit, British tourists are only allowed to stay in the Schengen area (a free movement area without border controls that includes 26 countries including Spain but excluding Ireland) for 90 out of 180 days and must get their passports stamped when they leave or could face being refused entry on another visit.
Mr Gandara added: âIt will be the first summer when passports for travellers to the UK have to be checked and the first when air traffic is likely to be normal, now that the British government has lifted all the restrictions imposed because of the pandemic.â
It comes as some holidaymakers are reporting missing flights at Malaga Airport in recent days due to massive queues. |

Amazing.
A majority of our citizens voted to leave the E.U. in a free democratic vote. We are now accused of tyranny against the loosing side. The usual well worn socialist rhetoric of xenophobia, (and racism too I expect). What part of a free democratic decision is so difficult to understand! (Rhetorical - not asking for an answer.)
Oh, I forgot! we, the leave voters, are stupid and were told what to do by the Russians, proven no doubt by the current fact that Boris and his conservative Government are Russian world enemies No.1, and Putin's mouthpiece is now threatening to nuke us for Johnsons world leading support for Ukraine and Zelenskyy (weapons and training) in their fight for freedom against a barbaric invasion. |

Ooh, a little touchy. I donât think that there is any question that xenophobia played a pivotal role in a very close election. Iâm not a socialistâsuch claims are often made when people donât have an argument. Neither are these researchers.
Quote: | British citizens who agreed that immigrants threaten their values and way of life were more likely to have voted to leave the EU, research led by Goldsmiths, University of London has found.
This xenophobia, or a fear of other groups, was a strong predictor of a âBrexitâ vote regardless of people's age, gender or education the study showed. |
I am of Irish heritage, and have noticed the very different views of Brexit in Ireland and Scotland. |
