|
|
Hi everyone. Just came back from HI and missing windsurf like a crack addict.
Since the wind is super crappy here in Los Angeles, I was wondering where to go for a smaller trip during winter without breaking the bank account (family and all).
Going to NC for the holidays, but probably too cold to do anything without turning into a popsicle.
Also I windskate in Santa Monica if others are interested.
Thanks for reading,
David |

There is only one place to go and that is Baja California Sur. |

Driving to San Diego and taking a flight out of Tijuana airport can save you a busload of money when flying to Cabo or La Paz. It's all very easy and safe now with a new airport bridge from the USA. |

Thanks for the replies. Yes I have read a few posts underneath mine, and it does seem that Baja is the way to go. Planning a three day weekend in few weeks. From reading posts, it also seems that La Ventana is the most reliably windy spot?
Thanks for the money savvy advice too. Any other things I should know about traveling there (although other posts kinda have it covered) keep me posted. Also if you had a good or bad experience it will help me prepare.
From the photos it seems that it is a port tack spot?

Thanksgiving at Lake Mohave can be amazing. The water isn't too cold by then (55-60) and if there's a Santa Ana it works. As a bonus you can stay at Laughlin, sort of a low rent Vegas.
It's bump and jump mostly, and seems to blow early until about noon or 1, when it backs off for kiting or longboards. I've been there a few Thanksgivings and have always had one good day. |

Brian, where may be the best spot location at Lake Mohave? |

Too early for La Ventana and the El Norte winds, unless you wait until mid Nov.
Lake Mojave and gee, what's the bay in Northern Baja Sea of Cortez? LA sailors USED to go there most mid November's, before the El Norte season.
K-40 can work if it's clearing NW winds, and Punta San Carlos goes until the end of Oct. but can work on clearning NW coastal winds.
Jalama can blow any clearing winds, open day times, but camping starting to end around end of Oct.
I've sailed Leo Carillo and Gladstones on clearing NW winds, and Bolca Chica on Santa Ana's ( side off, 45 degrees and warm). |

Greetings Mr Wind,
I am not Brian, but I do have some experience with Lake Mohave, as the
Utah SurfRats frequented the place for years until we discovered
(and could afford) Maui in the Winter.
The best spot depends on which way the wind is blowing. Those "Santa
Anas" actually develop a fairly good North wind at Mohave, and the best
place to access that is Cabinsite Point also sometimes called Cabinsite Cove
Near the very South end of the lake on the Arizona side just outside of
Bullhead City. Can be 4.5M sails, but is more typically 6M conditions around
the Thanksgiving week. So handy and close to cheap and easy food, liquor,
and accommodations (oh and general vice style night life) in Laughlin
Nevada (maybe 15 minutes max from the launch site). Even cheaper
accommodations , but not as much fun across the river in Bullhead.
On a South or SW wind just before a passing front, the best access from
your direction is near Searchlight Nevada at a place called 6 Mile Cove.
It can develop pretty big swell on a big South day. The road down to
the "camping" might get a little sketchy.
If you have more interest, let me know, and I'll try and get more specific.

I always get 3 days a month in Malibu from November through February. This summer I got an average of 2 days a week. Spring can be great at county line. You might want to get yourself a 95 liter board. |

Thanks Craig, I got busy.
I've only sailed Cabinsite. Easy to get to and nice enough bathrooms. The only quirk is the fist sized rocks at the launch. Wear booties. People who sail there often have carpet they use to rig. I just rig in the dirt by the bathrooms and walk my gear to the water. |
