|
|
I have a JP x-cite ride 125l. The smallest sail the manufacturer recommends is 5.5. I just bought a 5.8 which works well, but I wanted to get a smaller sail for when the 5.8 is overpowered.
Would a 5.0 work on my board? I'm not sure what kind of depreciated performance to expect. My next step will be getting a 100L board or so, but financially that is not possible until probably next season. I want to get as much water time as possible so I was going to try a 5.0
I have a 110L board which it would work on, but it's really an old board from the 90's so I don't even use it.
Thanks. |

Works fine, even down to 3.7.
Just need smooth water, and not huge unorganized chop.
The board is too big for huge, unorganized dancing water upwelling surging chop conditions, but fine if the water is manageable.
Manufacturer's suggestions are just a general guide. |

Hi ghost1
A very important aspect of your question is missing: will it work for what?
if you want you can give us more details as to what your weight is , what kind of conditions are you sailing in, what kind of gear do you own besides the one you already disclosed and finally what your near future goals are so we can assemble a gear short list for you and in general be of a better help or just to make it more interesting
Otherwise the simple answer will be : YES it will work ...for some .

What Leed (Zirtaeb) said. As long as the water is flat you should have no problem.

Depends on your spot. Make sure you are not overpowered on 5.0 or else the board just won't turn or won't stop!
You might get by to catch a few rides but everything will be so difficult. That old 110L board may look really good after all.
I ride powered 5.4 on my 105 here (Cabarete) but if I'm powered on 5.0 it'd be really difficult, it's so much board to turn.
How big are you? Oh and use a much smaller fin something in the low 30s, maybe less if you have. Otherwise you'll have so much lift. _________________ *NEW* - Manu's Windsurfing Blog, The STORE! |

Of course it will work. May not be the best set up for the conditions but it will work. Fin change is a good idea. You might consider moving your harness lines forward and your mast track back. The center of effort or balance point is forward as you go down in sail size. Its very important to balance your sail size and harness lines and sail position with relation to your fin and straps. That's why boards have so many strap holes and a long mast track..... |

the JP will become large with the 5.0, the manufactures claims of sail range are usually, well almost always exaggerated .
Points already made:
Your weight..its its 135lb
OR if its 195lbs
will have significant bearing on the combo. Better suited to higher weight
THE fin will have to be downsized , I would go with a freewave or wave shape .
This combo is not what I would consider ideal, the board will become
un-manageable at some point. _________________ K4 fins

Yep. just as everybody else said. get yourself a good used 38cm fin
(maybe there's one in your 110), and go for a ride with a 5.0.
It'll be bouncy, but managable, and you'll get more time on the water.
I have to mention that where I typically sail, there are a lot of
used 100ltr boards for sail (yuk yuk). Try Windance this summer,
when they have more boards in that range.

Apologies ! So how is it going so far? Do you follow Isobars advise to stick with one model sails quiver for a specific board?
5.0 below 5.8 maybe too much of a gap-a 5.2/5.3 would be better. Also it's pointless IMO if you don't have the smaller FSW yet. Even 5.8 is a bit small for your Xcite ride if you ask me-it is more work then fun. Any ideas for the FSW ? |
