I'm pretty sure the Futura guys would disagree with you on the speed of that board. They seem pretty fast to me with the right guy pushing them. Close to the Isonic and that's about as fast as you can get.... |

Cutouts are needed for wide boards.
How wide is up to sailor size, wind speed, and chop. |

If you filll in the cutouts on any Formula board, you'd end up with a GO board. |

Thanks for the heads up John. I didn't realize I was that good of a sailor.

Go wide freemove. Look at the new Tabou Rocket wide, Starboard Atom IQ or the JP magic ride. I like the first two because of the tail cut outs. Some will argue, but I think they really work on the wide boards. I sailed the IQ 110 for a season and for me that means over 100 days on the water. Early and easy planning, good top speed but very clam at speed. Doesn't feel that fast but you can pass a lot of people. The pads on the IQ are super thick and help the old back and knees. I haven't sailed the other two but I'm sure they work as good. RRD has a one also. My windsurfing buddy has one that's ok. I wasn't all that impressed with it. The IQ just did everything a little bit better. "Might" be the tail cut outs on the IQ. These new wide boards have been talked about over and over again on this forum. I think they are impressive at what they are suppose to do. Put fun with ease into lite wind windsurfing. |

I suspect cutouts are great for wide freemove boards where the rider places emphasis on top speeds in solid planing conditions.
However, that might cross over to free RACE aspects, and certainly over freeride.
Without the cutouts, the transition from non planing to planing that threshold of sheer torture, is much smoother.
You can alleviate the need for cutouts with a narrower tail in the outline.
Imagine cutouts on a wave sailing board. |

This is what Remi (Starboard race board designer) told me just a few months ago. He has been playing with cut outs for many years now.
For faster planing the board needs to be wider - this helps on lulls and getting onto a plane, coming out of a jibe.
Once at speed or accelerating the board width causes the board to become unstable - bouncing, sliding, etc. So the width becomes a problem.
This is where the cut outs start to make a difference.
As you move faster less of the board is touching (water line moves back).
So the cutouts stabalize the board as the board accelerates.
He started explaining all the angles of the cut outs, the edges, the release points, and even the transom angle. All I got was this things are important the rest was lost in his French accent.
Cutouts if done wrong will mess up the design. Starboard loves to experiment. Remi spends a lot of time experimenting with the Isonic. The Futura is a detuned version for the rest of us.
Isonic - fast slalom board
Futura - fast freerace
Atom IQ - wide early planing freeride (fast) |
