Let's be clear, I didn't say that. I don't care about smelt. However, an engineering project with heavy equipment means someon else does. More importantly, water has been diverted from farmers, so fields lie dormant. Food prices up 20% last year. Water diversion had everything to do with the smelt, and hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland are affected.
This means people in Africa die. So the smelt are important to someone. |

Jim:
How about more details about the SFBA meeting? There is nothing about it on the SFBA website. Time, date, address, room number, eligible attendees, etc.

Rick--starts at 7:00 (or so) at the Saint Francis. Don't know what room, but it will be posted and they will know at the door. All windsurfers and kiteboarders are welcome. It takes a majority of the Board to authorize a position. I will be a bit late. Tomorrow, the 4th. Hope to see you.

After slogging through the draft (reminds me of my last session) I see that vehicle speeds on unpaved roads are limited to 15 mph, but no mention of barely-paved Sherman Island Rd. I would propose a speed limit of 30 mph for trucks hauling material, either in or out. We have experienced 40-50 mph 18-wheelers with little regard for pedestrians, bicyclists, fishermen, windsurfers, wildlife, anything. Frightening.
ps Not so good for the road, either. |

I first thought this was about the new Delta Tunnels issue...(I guess it’s an old tunnel issue)
Hopefully this will be less controversial…but a quick read shows the first finding is a bit “fishy”– I rarely see the cover picture location that deserted:
“The proposed project would not impact cultural resources, land use and planning, mineral resources, population and housing, public services, recreation, or utilities and service systems.”
So 2 (Access and Baja) of the 5 Sherman Island launches are in jeopardy.
Even if it takes 2+ years will the launches ever be viable?
Concrete pads, fences, electric poles/lines, lighting, pipes booms...?
“concrete operation pad on top of the levee crown at each of the fish release sites; construction of concrete foundations for support site lighting and a downspout at each of the fish release sites; construction of a fish release system (including piles, a screened intake pipe, and a release pipe) with security fencing and a gate at each of the fish release sites; construction of a log boom for protection of each fish release site; and providing electrical service to the fish release sites”
See http://www.capradio.org/6847 the truck is perpendicular to the river – that will be a large footprint.
Regarding the 2 existing sites - I think the one site is on the east side of the Antioch bridge about 4 miles away from County Park, I could not find the second. Now there are going to be 2 seal feeding piers in 500 yards?
SwellRipper - has a great idea - no $10M+ for that.
And no kiter posts/not in their forum?
Will try to post photos later

I'm a Peninsula sailor, but urge local Delta sailors and kiters to closely examine and get ahead of this issue before it's too late. Often a lot of "paperwork" ahead of such projects is perfunctory and boilerplate, and just used as a means to an end. Any premises and promises in it can not necessarily be relied upon, and yes giving up venue footprint space for "structures" does not sound good at all.
A construction project at the west end of the Dumbarton Bridge closed upwind access there for several years, and then yes, the completed structures and associated fencing effectively sealed off access there forever. This was a lightly used venue but still of great value to some local sailors during certain conditions, but it is lost now. Don't lose valuable parts of Delta sailing sites, or lose that special Delta vibe on the beach and replace it with misplaced ugly "structures", this would be a sad thing. _________________ Carve the face! |
