Some friend of me has bought one in 4,5m2 which is arriving in two weeks.
I hope he let me try it... |

We now have a couple of threads going on sails so let's revive this one on three-batten surf sails.
Check out the performance of the entire rig on this epic JP hit.

I switched to three battens (Hot KS3) last fall. My own 2-cents is that they are unreal.
Before trying one I was pretty skeptical. Realized it was a game changer during the first session. Hard to switch back to four - let alone even contemplate five.
List everything you think would be "wrong" with a three-batten sail. Now imagine your dismay to find out everything you thought was wrong actually turned out to be better!
If you are a surf sailor you should give one a try. You will be seeing many more of them soon.
Cheers,

i've sailed in maui. it's a great place to sail. super easy conditions to deal with the majority of the time.
i do remember a kona day being quite challenging by compare.
imagine a kona day mixed in with a cold and blustery onshore condition with a strong following current with close interval waves in the surf.
maybe a few sessions with a 3 battened sail in those conditions might change one's attitude about how many battens may be appropriate?
in steady state winds with a 5.2 or smaller, maybe less battens are better. i can count on one hand how often i get maui perfect conditions at my local sites.
one of the most interesting differences is the lack of acceleration i got from the few 4 and 3 battens sails i've tried here in florida. they have to be flatter, since there are fewer battens to support the shape of the sail.
the stability factor i was expecting to be the issue, and it was when i was extremely lit up one day, but when the wind was in the expected sail range, it was not an issue.
additionally, water starting a stubby sail in less than perfect conditions is more challenging too. why? there is no mast length to either leverage one up, or to reach high enough to get over any surface clutter from those very close interval waves.... _________________ www.aerotechsails.com

The Hot Sail threes have more shape sewn into them under the boom than my other hot Sails with more battons.
All the threes and fours in the past were flat with little shape in the sail.
These designs are a new animal.
Water starting is done in more than one way. Boxers all rigged on 370 up to 5.3 at one time. Slalom guys used to big sails had a harder time starting them than some wave guys.
In our clinics we teach wave starting by snapping the sail horizontal a few inches above the water and ducking under it to clear it. Stubby sails do this easier. I can't do it on a big sail.
Slalom sailors who often sail over 6.0 don't usually do this even in the waves on small sails.
This is fast start with any sail so it is good in closely spaced waves full of sharks like in Belize.
Jinge is accurate as always. Here in Maui things are a lot easier. Most of us don't do kona days, even those who live at kona launches. |

on this thread, the aerotech vice was called out for looking different. that's because it actually has a significant sail area under the boom. the hot sail shown has dramatically less sail area below the boom. that was done on the bolt model previously. if one wants to have all the sail area above the boom that is a personal choice. does that make a rig top heavy when one is sailing a 4.2 or smaller? probably not as much as one is on a 5.8 or larger.
i smile with joy when i can use a 6.8 sail in the waves here in pathetic florida surf conditions.
again, with following currents, close interval surf, and much less dense wind, one may not be able to snap start? some of my friends that used to sail lots that lived in maui or the west coast, and moved here.
i don't fully know why the maui anemometers read 15-20 and we all use a meter to a meter and a half less sail in maui than we do in east coast US conditions that show the same numbers..... air is denser, getting crammed around that ginormous mountain, air and water temps the same for hundreds to thousands of miles all around, etc.
my biggest concern is the large disconnect between how windsurfing R+D is done in pozo or maui conditions and yet most of the customer base does not live in those spots. _________________ www.aerotechsails.com

Has anyone else noticed how 4 batten wave sails started re-appearing about the same time that quad fin wave boards became popular.
Now that 3 batten sails are hitting the market, tri fin boards have made a comeback.
I suspect by next year we'll see 2 batten wave sails and twin fin boards will be back in fashion.
If the trend continues, we could evolve back to single batten sails and single fin boards and have come full circle back to the beginnings of the sport. |
