pro's and con's of the 3 batten proto's i've played with:

pro

light, more stable than i would have thought within a specific wind range, soft power, compact, "disappears" in turns.

con

not much pump due to short mast, no water start "leverage" in puffy wind with wind shadows down low due to wave trough dynamics, pretty abrupt wind range limitations to the upside wind increases often seen in temperate climates.

in short, another trade wind oriented "development." another change for the sake of marketing? not quite. school sail app's a big plus.

for some dealers and schools foreign countries, the bling of graphics on the aerotech vice were well received at the last surf expo. visibility is part of what makes our sport an eye catcher. we certainly need more spark to gather more eyeballs.

the KS3 by Hot Sails Maui is available so a production sail: not tried one . The reviews are great.

the 2014 Aerotech Vice is 3 1/2 battens, really squatty and compact, looks odd to me, they say even 6.0 rigs on a 400cm mast, my Naish '
Boxer 5.8 in 2007 rigged 400.
Neil Pryde : below

Ezzy will have a 3batten.

I was a skeptic on 4 batten, but now have 3, they have some negatives, but whats perfect ? my own thoughts are 5.5m size wise as a maximum, then stick with 5 batten, all subject to change as the 4batten are getting bigger, will need to try the 3B, to make a judgement, from reviews the KS3 us a winner

form follows function. if one designs for 3 battens, is there a prescribed look that one must adhere to?

If one designs 4, 5 or 6 batten wave sails is there a prescribed look , certainly the answer is no, would follow that 3B would be similar, the VICE has 3.5, same answer

will stand by my statement that it looks odd, with several concepts.
Please note that I haven't seen it nor sailed it, so its just conversation based on observation of several photos and comparison to others

primary difference is easy to spot? designer steve g. thinks there ought to be some sail area below the boom. thus, form follows function. again, the obsession for short and squatty may have benefits, offset with some con's. i've sailed the sails of the 1980's with few battens. sailed the 4 batten ones of the late 90's. sailed the 3 batten vice prototypes. some like the really old stuff, some like the bling of the new. i sail in some pretty light and waffly conditions, that sometimes surprise to the upside. can't be bothered to rig up or down as much i used to have to in the bad old days of the late 80's and early 90's.....
