I'm headed down to Oceano this Sat morning, headed back Sun afternoon. Gonna hang with some surfer friends who said they want to try their hands at windsurfing... if not I'll just run out by myself.

Wind seems light in that area so I'm bringing a 120L + 6.5 and 5.8 sails.

I don't think anyone is gonna have the patience to travel more than 45 minutes from Pismo.

Based on poking around Windfinder, it looks like Avila Beach and Lake Lopez have sufficient wind. Morro Bay is too far away according to Google Maps. I couldn't find any info on people windsurfing Avila Beach though. Does Lake Lopez have water right now? Someone posted here that if there is fog at Pismo and its hot in Paso Robles, wind will be good at the Lake. Forecast calls for 65F and foggy at Pismo and 81F and sunny at Paso Robles.

Any tips on where to go?

Also, I've never windsurfed in the ocean before, only SF bay area and Naxos in Greece. So there is no way I'm going to go "learn" somewhere with gigantic waves that could destroy me (Jalama, for example, looks way too intense from pictures).

Thanks!

Arroyo Laguna can be great fun, but it's maybe an hour or an hour and a half from Pismo. There's some waves to work through, but if the swell isn't too big, you've can usually punch out fairly easily. It's much less difficult than Jalama to get through the impact zone.

Pismo can be tough to sail because it is often straight onshore, and that can make it a challenge to get outside the wave zone. Also, a bubble can form preventing the wind from filling in. Morro Bay can have that same problem.

If you elect to try Lopez Lake, you want to get there fairly early because it tends to be best late morning to early afternoon (11AM-3PM).
