probably key phrase is MOST boards.

If the intent is to increase upwind, with more area, then it will. It will provide a sharper turning radius, the pivot point is not as large. It will feel more planted to the water, thus more controlled.

there are 2 negatives associated with extra fins, the top speed will be less, and for the same reason more drag, planing will be slower. The addition of toe in and asymmetrical fins will combat those, some.

probably key phrase is MOST boards.

Props to you for knowing what you like and re-configuring accordingly. Everyone has their own taste and style, one man's trash is another man's treasure. Board companies have to come up with the latest greatest thing to sell new boards every year. Interseting to see twinzers and quads fading except for perfect side off wave sailing while tri-fins are the latest rage. Open Ocean and Real Wind have been making them for a decade or more now.

Bottom line though is that it is the shape that makes a board. Fins can be added, subtracted, and adjusted. Tri-fins may plane earlier, stick to the water and go up wind a little better, but in my opinion they can't match a good single fin for top end speed, looseness, and a lively feel.

Some would call those traits nervous and unpredictable. Trash and treasures...

My personal experience is the exact opposite. Yours may differ. And let's not forget the impact the rocker/board shape has.

My experience is based on owning 2 quads, a thruster and a single currently, having owned other quads, twins and singles in the past, and sailing probably 60% crappy cross onshore waves in the mainly 2-6 ft range, and 40% nice DTL sailing.

To me quads (with a fast rocker) are brilliant for crap conditions / slog and ride and intermediate/advanced sailors such as myself (i.e. not pro level). The better the conditions (bigger waves, more cross to cross off) the more a thruster or single works for me. If I lived in Maui I'd only sail a thruster or single. If I lived in the Gorge I'd probably only sail a single too. Anywhere else with mushy waves and crappy wind, a fast rockered quad or twin with a high volume (vs your weight) is a godsend. Top 3 boards (1 I own, other 2 on my wish list) are Quattro Quad 110, Goya Quad 118 and Starboard Nuevo 110.

To summarize my experience - singles for bump and jump, quads for real world crappy cross onshore, singles and thrusters for perfection DTL.

You should also consider trying out slotted fins, or canards, if you like control, upwind, controlled spinouts, without the drag of the side fins.

don't see any fading, but the windsurf QUADs and Twinzers are pretty much the same, twin fins in the rear and large with fronts small , whereas a QUAD should actually have 4 fins very close to the rail of similar in size. A Thruster would be likewise in size , the same or similar.

Terminology from SURF boards, doesn't always transpose to windsurfing boards in quite the same interpretation.
Odd that from your last lines wish list//summarize: that the Nuevo a twin is not found.

I find it much easier to get a 2+1//thruster type fin configuration correct than a quad. I really like trailing tri fin for its variety.

I see that each fin option for other than a single all have + - .
