Windsurf foiling, wing foiling, wave sailing, freestyling, or any type of windsurf activity can be done if you devote the time and effort to it..and they are all worthy accomplishments. I plan on giving the wing a go at it this season.

Thanks Kevin. That was exactly what I was wondering - what is the difference in the experience and why one over the other. I know everyone's experience is probably different, but its great to hear from someone who has tried both (or three).

I am not an early adopter, so it's good to hear firsthand from the pioneers of this new sport.

I was a late adopter to windsurf foiling. Tried it on the pink NP foil, and wasn't hooked. Tried it on the Fanatic Flow H9 and that was better, but there was nothing magical about it. It wasn't until I got on the big (for then) Slingshot Infinity 76 that I felt the magic. Everybody's experience will be different, but for what I was looking for out of foiling, that wing hit the mark. For me the first two foils were too close to windsurfing. YMMV

The wing thing to me looked pretty ridiculous... and not in a good way. I'm not exactly an early adopter to that either, mostly b/c I had a shoulder injury last year that make winging uncomfortable. Decided to dedicate some time to it to learn it, and it's fun in it's own way. It's definitely different, and a little harder to get up and going than I thought it would be. Once up, I think it's actually easier than I though it would be, especially with respect to pitch control while on foil. One thing that threw me off was, as a regular footer, getting foiling on starboard (goofy foot) side. At first, I needed another 5kt to get foiling on my bad side. The gap has narrowed, but still I feel much more comfortable foiling regular foot. I don't switch my feet when I jibe, but I will learn to, as it's not so easy to go upwind switch foot, and also some launches, I'll have to start goofy foot.

I did some winging on the beach at low tide, which gave me some insights to the wing handling dynamics. If you're comfortable on a skateboard, it may be a good tool for learning.

The wind was strong at the SLWA launch by the San Leandro Marina on Friday. 3rd Ave was too offshore and too light on inside with the south wind, so we drove east over the bridge in Corona Light traffic to check it out. Wish we had gone over sooner because looks like it blew there all afternoon under sunny skies. We still got a pretty good session in though!

On the classic iwindsurf site, check out the "Local Info" section for both the Oakland Airport and San Leandro sensors for more info on this launch. I know East Bay people are well aware of this launch, but Peninsula 3rd heads may not be.

In SW winds you can launch from westside San Mateo bridge. But with wind clocking more SSW on Friday, we went for the SLWA launch instead, and we were rewarded with fun sailing in the East Bay! And the mini-sideshow in the parking lot was just bonus entertainment!

Doh! I left my GREEN RIGGING TOOL in the grass by the SL launch. If anybody tries the SLWA launch in San Leandro sometime during this south wind cycle, please check grass rigging area for it. If found, please return it to Dmitry or the little glass bulletin board thing at 3rd Ave. I'll try and get it back from there.

Mahalo!
